A student's 'joke' tweet that she could be Madeleine McCann has gone viral after being shared over 30,000 times.

Harriet Brookes text her friends after discovering that she had a mark on both her eye and her leg which appeared to match the missing girls.

In the shared chat, the Manchester student had written, "'Right guys. I don’t usually believe in conspiracy theories but honestly I think I’m Madeleine McCann."

She then sent images of her eye and leg to prove it, to which her mates ridiculed her. But she went on to joke again, "I’m Madeleine McCann and I don’t know what to do with myself."

But despite the laughs amongst friends, many Facebook users were riled up by the post.

"Are you even Madeline or are you just joking messing with peoples head," one user hit back.

While Harriet was kidding, the likeness is unrealistic as Madeleine would be 14 years old today, while she is at University.

Madeleine went missing in 2007 during a holiday in Portugal with her parents.

While she has never been found, it was recently announced that another £154,000 had been allocated in the search for her.
