When Katie left rehab earlier this year, she hoped it would mark a new chapter after a troubled couple of years in the wake of her marriage split from third husband Kieran Hayler, which saw her turning to cocaine and alcohol to cope.
But last week, the mum of five revealed she was back in The Priory facility after hitting rock bottom following her horror accident in July, which saw her break both feet after jumping off a 25ft wall while on holiday in Turkey.
The wheelchair-bound star admitted her mental health had been “badly affected” and she was concerned about the impact it would have on her three-month relationship with ex-Love Island star Carl Woods – with whom she put on an amorous display last week while making their first red carpet appearance together at a party.
Katie, 42 – who recently took a two-week break from the spotlight to “focus on her recovery” – told fans, “Everything has hit me so hard, not only am I in a wheelchair but I have to learn to walk again and I’m disabled. It’s humiliating. I feel so embarrassed being pushed around. People treat me differently and I don’t know why my boyfriend stays with me. I just hate it because I’m helpless.”
For Katie – who is being treated for anxiety and self-esteem issues as a result of her trauma – it serves as yet another setback to what she’d hoped would be a fresh start this year.
Over the past few years she’s faced bankruptcy, a broken engagement to Kris Boyson, a burglary, a kidnap threat, a driving ban and a highly publicised battle with drug and alcohol abuse, which forced her to check in to The Priory last year. She also feared the worst when her eldest son Harvey, 18, spent almost two weeks in intensive care in July this year, after experiencing a high temperature and chest pains.
Prior to her holiday accident, the former glamour model had gone public with toyboy Carl, 31, describing the reality star as her very own “Prince Charming”. But her disability has left her fearful of their relationship crumbling.
She said, “I feel sorry for Carl because he’s such a handsome, gorgeous man, and I bet people look at him and think, ‘Look at you having to push her around in a wheelchair’. I look at the reflection in the shop windows – it’s demoralising, the heartbreak.”

The star recently underwent a six-hour operation to repair her broken feet and, last week, released a video showing her sobbing and crying out in pain as medics removed the stitches.
Katie has since revealed her hopes to marry Carl and have two children in a bid to finally get her happy ending. And according to friends, she hopes her decision to go back to rehab will prove to Carl she’s serious about settling down.

An insider tells Closer, “Katie wants to show Carl how serious she is about their future. She’s very emotional at the moment, but she’s trying hard to get back to a good place. She sees having a baby with Carl as the perfect fresh start, even though it will be a bombshell for them as a couple, and wants to prove to him that she can be the mother of his kids.”
If Katie does marry Carl, it’ll be a case of fourth time lucky after failed marriages to singer Peter Andre – who she has previously dubbed “the love of my life” – cage fighter Alex Reid and former stripper Kieran Hayler. She split from love cheat Kieran in 2018, and with their divorce due to be made official any day now, Katie is already looking forward to the idea of another wedding.

Katie has made no secret about wanting more children. Earlier this year, she said she’d be open to a sperm donor and also adoption, if necessary, and said a fertility doctor had advised that she’d need to try “in the next couple of years” if she wanted to add to her family.
But with news that it could take up to two years for her to properly get back on her feet, her baby plans may have to wait. Friends say the star – who is mum to Harvey, Junior, 15, Princess, 13, Jett, seven, and Bunny, six – is keen to have kids with Carl as soon as possible.
The source says, “She would’ve had a baby yesterday if she could, but she’s been told no babies until she’s walking again and off her pain medication. She also accepts she’s not in the best place, physically and emotionally, to have a kid right now. She’s going through hell.
“Carl is very paternal and Katie would love to go down the natural route if she could, rather than use a surrogate or adopt. She’s not worried about her biological clock as she knows there are other options later on, like IVF. For her, it’s a case of the sooner the better and she believes that if she can prove how serious she is about getting her head in the right place, then Carl will also want to start a family with her. Just the thought of it makes her happy – it would be a dream come true for her.”
