Although their personal and professional lives often make headlines, it’s uncommon for the Rooneys to speak out about what really goes on behind closed doors at their Cheshire mansion.

But now that could be set to change, as footballer Wayne is reportedly filming a candid documentary about his prolific career, and has sat down for several interviews with the team who made the BAFTA award-winning documentary on Amy Winehouse.

It’s claimed he has also spoken about “several aspects” of his personal life with wife Coleen, including “marital mistakes and drink-driving”, as a source adds, “It is made clear he’s a fantastic dad, and loving husband – but he holds his hands up to previous lapses in judgement.”

A spokesperson for Wayne confirmed the documentary’s release, but said, “No decisions have yet been made on what content is or isn’t part of the movie.”

It will be the first time Wayne, 35, and Coleen, 34 – who have sons Kai, 11, Klay, seven, Kit, five, and three-year-old Cass – have fully addressed his past scandals, which include cheating, paying for prostitutes and gambling.

News of the documentary comes as Coleen’s court case with Rebekah Vardy, 39, stepped up a notch last week – with it being suggested a trial could be set in the autumn – leaving fans questioning why the pair have decided now is the time to let the public into their lives.

One fan wrote, “The guy is super rich already so why do a reveal-all interview? What purpose can it possibly serve?” with another replying, “It’s a profile-raising cash cow.”

Media expert Nick Ede – who has worked with the likes of Eva Longoria and Mel B – believes the timing of the documentary is “perfect”, as the couple can control their own narrative ahead of personal details potentially being aired publicly in court if the WAGatha case goes to trial.

Nick says, “The documentary is more important now than ever. Coleen and Wayne will likely be involved in the edits, so it’ll show who they really are.

“It’s their chance to give their side of the story and to show themselves as a loving and supportive unit. They probably want to show their story before anybody else hears about it if it comes to that in court.”

Victoria Beckham

One half of the indestructible Beckham brand, Victoria was the original Queen WAG in 2006. At the time Victoria had been married to David for seven years and had just given birth to her third boy, Cruz. She had also just launched her denim line, dvb Style and walked the catwalk for Roberto Cavalli. Over a decade later, she is a fully fledged and well respected fashion designer, with a fourth addition to her brood – the adorable Harper.

Coleen rose to fame as a WAG at just 20 years old. Coleen and Wayne are married and they celebrated their ten-year anniversary in 2018. However, Wayne's repeated cheating has strained the relationship over the years. They have four children together, Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass. Since 2006 Coleen has released a fitness DVD, been a style advisor for Littlewoods and even had a column with us in Closer magazine.

Cheryl

How could we forget Cheryl as a WAG? Back then, 23-year-old Cheryl was a popstar in Girls Aloud who had just married Ashley Cole. Nowadays, Cheryl is a household name and a worldwide celebrity in her own right. After splitting from Ashley in 2010, she had a successful (well, successful-ish) solo career, was a judge on The X Factor and was the face of beauty brand L'Oreal. She married Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in 2016 but they divorced three months later. Most recently, Cheryl separated from One Direction singer, Liam Payne, who she has a baby son called Bearwith.

Abbey first grabbed our attention in 2006 as one of the finalists in Britain's Next Top Model. She began dating Peter Crouch that same year and the pair are now married with three kids Sophia Ruby, Liberty Rose and baby Johnny. Lingerie model Abbey went on to win Strictly Come Dancing in 2013 and she returned to Britain's Next Top Model as the show's presenter. Not bad work, eh?

Danielle Lloyd was dating footballer Teddy Sheringham when she gained her WAG status. At the time, her title as Miss Great Britain was a controversial matter and she was later stripped of it. Fast forward to now and Danielle has appeared on TV shows such as Celebrity Big Brother, Total Wipeout, The Weakest Link and even Come Dine With Me. She has three sons, Archie, Harry and George with her now ex-husband Jamie O'Hara. Danielle gave birth to a fourth child with her husband Michael O'Neill, Ronnie, in 2017.

Frank has since married TV presenter Christine Bleakley and they've welcomed their daughter Patricia into the world.

Despite being married to one of the most famous footballers at the time, Louise Owen wasn't your stereotype WAG. She has always managed to keep her distance from the limelight. Her passion is rescuing race horses and she currently lives in Wales with her husband Michael and their four children, Gemma, James, Jessica and Emily.

Now known as Carly Cole after marrying midfielder Joe Cole in Chelsea in 2009, Carly loved to party during the 2006 World Cup (we know the feeling). She then spent two weeks in the jungle during I'm A Celeb in 2009 before being the third to be booted out. Carly and Joe have had three children, Ruby, Harrison and Max together.

It’s common for personal and sensitive details to be discussed in libel hearings, as seen in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s highly-publicised 2020 case, so there’s a possibility Wayne’s checkered past could be dredged up.

Last week, the WAGs’ case, in which Becky is suing Coleen for libel damages after she accused her of leaking personal information about her, was addressed in the High Court again after peace talks between the two women allegedly collapsed.

It was revealed both Coleen and Becky’s phones and laptops – with private messages and phone call history – could be examined for the case.

Becky’s team also disclosed they’d racked up £897,000 in costs, which include calling of witnesses and forensic evidence, which Coleen – whose legal costs are valued at £402,312 – blasted as “grotesque.” The loser will pay all costs, which could – with damages on top if Rebekah wins – exceed £2m

After the latest hearing, Becky shared a post on Instagram which read, “They say people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones... but when Karma is ready she will throw a bowling ball at your head.”

Becky has also hinted at doing a tell-all, saying last month she was considering a blog due to the “constant speculation of the sort of person you are” as a WAG.

Wayne’s misdemeanours began in 2004, when he cheated on then-girlfriend Coleen with a number of prostitutes at a brothel in Liverpool, including a 48-year-old grandmother nicknamed “The Auld Slapper.”

She forgave him, and they married in 2008. But after just two years of marriage and while Coleen was pregnant with son Kai, former escort Helen Wood claimed Wayne had paid for a threesome with her and friend Jenny Thompson at a Manchester hotel.

In 2017 he was caught drink-driving in a car with party girl Laura Simpson after a night out while Coleen was pregnant with Cass – and Laura claimed they kissed and she would have bedded him had they not been caught together.

That same year, he also reportedly blew £500k in two hours at a casino, and last year he admitted to a gambling addiction as a young footballer, saying, “It didn’t feel like real money.”

The Rooneys have generally remained silent about the scandals that have rocked their marriage in the past, but after Wayne’s night out with Laura almost cost him his marriage, Coleen uncharacteristically wrote a Facebook post in which she called her husband “stupid and selfish”, but insisted she was staying with him and she was “still in love” with him.

While Nick says the documentary could run the risk of other women “seeking to have their 15 minutes of fame” by coming forward with potentially exaggerated new claims, he believes the positives outweigh the negatives.

He says, “There’s always that issue of people coming out of the woodwork to make money or get their side across when a documentary is aired. But, ultimately, this is a really good way of us learning about Wayne and Coleen and forming our own opinions on what they’re like as a family and their relationship.”

Psychological therapist Emma Kenny also agrees that having their say before a potential libel trial is a good move as it allows them to “take back control.”

She says, “The documentary is a chance for Coleen and Wayne to show themselves in the best possible light. It will give Coleen – either herself or through Wayne – the chance to air her side of her life and relationship with Wayne and the boys before it’s made public knowledge in court.”

Emma also believes Coleen will be relieved to have sensitive issues addressed by Wayne directly in the documentary, in a bid to “set the record straight” and move forward with their marriage.

Emma says, “Coleen has been through so much with the cheating allegations, and they’ve managed to weather the storms privately. So having him finally apologise and own up to his mistakes so publicly would be really therapeutic and would enable them to set the record straight and move on, both publicly and privately.

“She’s very family-orientated, and despite what Wayne has done in the past, she doesn’t want people thinking badly of him or their marriage. Clearing the air publicly so it isn’t always hanging over them is probably a blessing and a relief for Coleen.”
