In yet another shocking twist in the infamous WAGatha Christie case, it was claimed last week that Coleen Rooney had planted “a spy” in arch-rival Rebekah Vardy’s camp.
According to sources, Coleen, 34 – who sparked the year-long saga when she publicly accused Rebekah’s Instagram account of leaking stories about her – reportedly now hopes that information gleaned from her “mole” will help her finally win the case.
Rebekah, who strongly denies the claims that she leaked stories about Coleen to a tabloid newspaper, is suing her for libel. And last month, a preliminary hearing ruled in Rebekah’s favour – agreeing that Coleen had clearly pointed the finger of blame at her when she released her now infamous Tweet about how she turned sleuth to discover who was leaking information.
The court set a new date of 8 February to leave room for “mediation” between the pair – which was quickly followed by the explosive new claims of espionage.
Now, former WAG Lizzie Cundy, who is pals with both Coleen and Rebekah, tells Closer it will be hard for the pair to trust anyone again following the claims that Coleen had someone who was “extremely close” to Becky feeding her inside information to help her case.
Lizzie, 52, who was previously married to former England player Jason Cundy, says, “As WAGs, Coleen and Becky will both know that you can only trust immediate family and a close-knit circle of friends.

Victoria Beckham
One half of the indestructible Beckham brand, Victoria was the original Queen WAG in 2006. At the time Victoria had been married to David for seven years and had just given birth to her third boy, Cruz. She had also just launched her denim line, dvb Style and walked the catwalk for Roberto Cavalli. Over a decade later, she is a fully fledged and well respected fashion designer, with a fourth addition to her brood – the adorable Harper.
Coleen Rooney
Coleen rose to fame as a WAG at just 20 years old. Coleen and Wayne are married and they celebrated their ten-year anniversary in 2018. However, Wayne's repeated cheating has strained the relationship over the years. They have four children together, Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass. Since 2006 Coleen has released a fitness DVD, been a style advisor for Littlewoods and even had a column with us in Closer magazine.
Cheryl
How could we forget Cheryl as a WAG? Back then, 23-year-old Cheryl was a popstar in Girls Aloud who had just married Ashley Cole. Nowadays, Cheryl is a household name and a worldwide celebrity in her own right. After splitting from Ashley in 2010, she had a successful (well, successful-ish) solo career, was a judge on The X Factor and was the face of beauty brand L'Oreal. She married Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in 2016 but they divorced three months later. Most recently, Cheryl separated from One Direction singer, Liam Payne, who she has a baby son called Bearwith.
Abbey Clancy
Abbey first grabbed our attention in 2006 as one of the finalists in Britain's Next Top Model. She began dating Peter Crouch that same year and the pair are now married with three kids Sophia Ruby, Liberty Rose and baby Johnny. Lingerie model Abbey went on to win Strictly Come Dancing in 2013 and she returned to Britain's Next Top Model as the show's presenter. Not bad work, eh?
Danielle Lloyd
Danielle Lloyd was dating footballer Teddy Sheringham when she gained her WAG status. At the time, her title as Miss Great Britain was a controversial matter and she was later stripped of it. Fast forward to now and Danielle has appeared on TV shows such as Celebrity Big Brother, Total Wipeout, The Weakest Link and even Come Dine With Me. She has three sons, Archie, Harry and George with her now ex-husband Jamie O'Hara. Danielle gave birth to a fourth child with her husband Michael O'Neill, Ronnie, in 2017.
Elen Rivas
Elen Rivas was engaged to Frank Lampard at the time of the 2006 World Cup, and was a permanent fixture in the WAG circle. After splitting from Frank after a seven-year relationship, she dated Peter Andre, appeared on Dancing On Ice and now looks after her two daughters Luna and Isla while working as a model. Frank has since married TV presenter Christine Bleakley and they've welcomed their daughter Patricia into the world.
Louise Owen
Despite being married to one of the most famous footballers at the time, Louise Owen wasn't your stereotype WAG. She has always managed to keep her distance from the limelight. Her passion is rescuing race horses and she currently lives in Wales with her husband Michael and their four children, Gemma, James, Jessica and Emily.
Carly Zucker
Now known as Carly Cole after marrying midfielder Joe Cole in Chelsea in 2009, Carly loved to party during the 2006 World Cup (we know the feeling). She then spent two weeks in the jungle during I'm A Celeb in 2009 before being the third to be booted out. Carly and Joe have had three children, Ruby, Harrison and Max together.
Alex Curran
Former nail technician Alex Curran began dating Liverpool player Steven Gerrard in 2002. She was one of the leading figures in the 2006 WAG squad. The pair married in 2007 and they have had four children together, Lexie, Lio, Lord, Lilly-Ella. Fashion lover Alex has released a perfume, fronted a Lipsy campaign and written a weekly shopping column for a national newspaper.
“When there are rumours that someone has been spying on you – like Becky’s experiencing – it’s heartbreaking because you are reminded why you have to be so careful with who you let into your life in the first place.
“So many people betrayed me when I was a WAG, I lost count! When my marriage ended nine years ago, I got a knock on the door from a newspaper saying, ‘We know.’ At that point my mum didn’t even know about my split, so I knew someone very close to me had completely broken my trust.
“When I was married, I know people were constantly spying on my relationship to see if there were any problems. Coleen and Becky have to live with this pressure every day and it makes you so paranoid and anxious – it’s like a living hell. It can turn into a very lonely life.
“The claims about the spy didn’t surprise me as the WAG world in general is like that. There’s lots of jealousy behind the scenes and you need to have eyes in the back of your head.
“Whether the story about Coleen’s mole is true or not, both girls will find it hard to ever trust people again after all the twists and turns of this legal case.
“I feel sorry for them because there’s no way to escape the idea of being watched now the stories are circulating – they’ll probably be feeling very vulnerable.”
Another WAG who said she has first-hand experience of a “snake in the camp” is Chantelle Heskey – who married former England player Emile Heskey, 42, in 2014 and has four children with him. In September, she told Closer about the emotional scars of having a trusted friend betray you.
Chantelle, 37, said, “Sadly, the fact is, there can be lots of people who you think are your mates that might be gossiping behind your back. I experienced a lot of emotions... anger, shock, hurt and a determination to find out who was responsible.
“At the time, I’d only just started dating Emile. It was very early days and, because he was incredibly well known, the newspapers were always writing about me. But they were finding out stuff that only my family and really close friends knew. In the end I started to question everyone – including my parents and my nan. It was really awful.”

Rebekah’s legal team last week vehemently denied the claims that Coleen had a spy in her inner circle, saying, “There can be no “mystery witness” to something that didn’t happen.”
But psychotherapist Noel McDermott warns that in any case, the women are on a path to destruction if they don’t quickly try to resolve the matter in an amicable way.
He tells Closer, “Going to court will just make it worse. It seems neither of them wants to back down because they see this as a way to heal painful wounds, but sadly it’s not the solution – the court case will only continue the vicious cycle and it’s self-destructive.
“They need to talk and they should both be mindful of their mental health at this time.”
