Fans of one of reality TV’s most established show will know that it’s normally about this time of year that we start looking forward to a new series of TOWIE.

Within the first few months of the year, the cast will start to pepper their Instagram Stories with BTS and filming posts, and we’ll know that the first whispers of life on set will begin to circulate, with rumours of love triangles and fall outs getting us all excited about the series ahead.

But this year things seem a little quiet on the TOWIE front, and it's been confirmed that bosses are suspending filming of the 30th series.

“Owing to ongoing challenges posed by Covid, the forthcoming series of The Only Way Is Essex will now be postponed until later in the year,” said ITV and Lime Pictures in a joint statement released to The Sun.

According to the same publication, the cast have been left “devastated” by the turn of events as plans to make the milestone anniversary extra special have been put on hold.

“The cast are obviously gutted as they were looking forward to getting back to filming,” said the source.

“They were told the difficult news this evening but have been reassured it will be worth the wait once the show returns. The next series will be a must watch as everyone is desperate to make up for lost time.”

There's no better place to start than the birth of the 'vajazzle', a crystal encrusted pattern that can be applied to a woman's nether regions to make their bits looks fancy and elegant. Beaut babe. After Amy Childs and Sam Faiers filmed this scene and it had aired, this was the only thing the nation was talking about, with salons across the country starting to offer the beauty treatment so fans of the show could replicate their idols and be a true Essex women.

Despite facing some set-backs due to the pandemic, The Only Way is Essex actually got away relatively unscathed in previous years as plenty of long-running TV programmes were forced to cancel altogether.

Most notably, the country’s longest running soaps, like Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders slashed their running schedules in half and had to find creative ways to bring viewers their soap fix after filming was ground to a halt during full lockdowns in the UK.

Even after filming resumed, cast were still required to maintain social distancing in many cases which can still be seen in scenes airing today, resulting in some awkward staging and less-than-believable interactions.

Meanwhile, two of the most popular shows on the ‘box, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing, also had to majorly adjust production, with Strictly forming strict social bubbles and doing away with their studio audience, while I’m A Celeb abandoned the Australian jungle and relocated to a Welsh castle (involving a whole new story arc and challenges) thanks to Australia’s strict travel restrictions.

Speaking in May 2020, one of TOWIE’s longest running cast members Pete Wicks predicted, “I think TOWIE can do social distancing. It's completely different to Love Island. Celebs Go Dating...it'd be hard to date with social distancing, wouldn't it?”

Turned out he was right - when he featured on the first and only virtual and socially distanced series of Celebs Go Dating later that year, it was awkward (thankfully it's just returned to E4 in its usual format - yay!).

“But TOWIE we film a couple of hours a day and generally a lot of it is in open spaces,” he continued. “The chances of TOWIE coming back are fairly high I would have said, in comparison.

“We were just about to start before lockdown. We should be filming now. We're not entirely sure what's happening with that.”
