They may not have won the fifth series of Love Island, but Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury have proved to be one of the show’s most successful couples. While winners Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea split less than five weeks after leaving the villa, Molly-Mae and Tommy have gone from strength to strength – buying a house together in 2022 as well as welcoming their daughter Bambi and getting engaged last year.
Speaking exclusively to Closer, Tommy, 25, admits he still finds it surreal that he found love on a reality TV show.
The professional boxer shares, “You never know what you’re going to get in life and that’s the truth. I never thought I’d go on [Love Island] and meet my fiancée who I’d have a baby with. It’s crazy, every time I think about it, it’s all madness. It just shows anything can happen.”
From the moment that Molly-Mae, 24, entered the Love Island villa as a bombshell in 2019, she and Tommy – the younger brother of former heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury – immediately hit it off. After becoming official in front of their fellow Islanders, including Curtis Pritchard and Chris Taylor, they eventually finished in second place.
By September, Tommy had moved into Molly-Mae’s Manchester flat and the pair eventually bought what they describe as their “dream home” in 2022 after a three-year hunt. The pair then marked another major relationship milestone when Molly-Mae gave birth to their daughter Bambi in January 2023.
At the time – when asked how becoming parents had affected their relationship – Molly-Mae admitted to her Instagram followers, “It’s made us one million times stronger. Having a baby is all about teamwork, we are still figuring it out together, but we are really lucky that becoming parents has only affected our relationship positively.”
And Tommy now adds, “I feel a lot more mature since becoming a dad. It’s definitely changed me.”
Opening up about Bambi, one, Tommy shares, “Bambi’s good – she’s very good. I think she’s very close to starting to walk, which is really exciting. Day by day she’s getting bigger and bigger, and we’re getting a lot more now – she’s starting to understand ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’ and all this sort of stuff. It’s unbelievable – it’s the best thing to ever happen to me.”
And as to whether or not the pair will be welcoming a second child together, Tommy jokes, “I don’t know. You can’t plan things like that. It just happens, doesn’t it?”
Tommy also shuts down any rumours of a split between him and Molly-Mae, teasing the pair’s plans for their upcoming wedding.
“We’re not putting pressure on it,” he reveals. “We’re enjoying being engaged and enjoying that period of our life, so we’re in no rush.”
Molly-Mae and Tommy got engaged in July 2023 when Tommy got down on one knee while the pair were on holiday in Ibiza with Bambi, but in recent months the pair have been plagued by split rumours after Molly-Mae failed to acknowledge Tommy’s 25th birthday online and fans spotted that Tommy hasn’t been liking or commenting on his fiancée’s social media posts.
In their five years together, Molly-Mae and Tommy have been publicly supportive of each other’s careers. When Molly-Mae – who is reportedly worth £6 million – was announced as the Creative Director of Pretty Little Thing in 2021 and released a collection with them, Tommy was there at the fashion show. And while Molly-Mae is also Tommy’s biggest fan when it comes to his boxing career, the currently undefeated professional boxer admits that his fiancée prefers not to attend matches for fear of seeing him get hurt.
He tells Closer, “Molly doesn’t like to see me fight, obviously, it’s understandable. I think it’s better sometimes if she does stay at home because I don’t want her to go through that, and it does take its toll. So, if she’s happy – I’m happy.”
In January, however, Tommy’s boxing career took a major hit after he was forced to have surgery on his right hand following years of dealing with a mystery injury.
“It’s healing well,” he explains. “I just can’t punch with it. I’m lifting weights and running, keeping myself in shape, but as far as using [my right hand] I’m not at that stage yet.
Hopefully in a couple of months I can start back with proper boxing training and get ready for the next fight.
“I’m recovering and hopefully at the end of the year, or early next year, I can get back in the ring and kick off where I left off with another big fight. We’re on a good run, so we’ll see who’s out there, see what presents itself and take it.”
Tommy was in attendance at the Fevo Sports Industry Awards, London.
