Gone are the days of how to refer to our current decade (the noughties? the tweenies? Who knows). Time to welcome a new era of rip-roaring twenties and to be honest, we're HERE FOR IT.
One thing the last decade has given us in bucketloads is funny pictures. The era of the internet meme, gifs and viral news stories has spawned a million frankly iconic images which we're still giggling at, even years later.
And while there were more than a few fights in the Closer offices over the funniest feline, the dumbest dog and the most comical compilation, there as some that have stood the test of time AND have universal lols appeal.
Without further ado, here are the top ten funniest pictures from the last decade.
Funniest pictures of the decade
Jesus fresco restoration
Remember the film, Mr Bean on Holiday? Where everyone's favourite social anomaly somehow gained possession of THE Mona Lisa, ruined it, and redrew it very badly with a sharpie? Well, in 2012, a sleepy town in Spain gained global notoriety when one of its residence, an 82 year old amateur painter, tried her hand at restoring a valuable fresca over a century old and came out with - this. Reports from after these pictures went viral say that the town's tourism industry has benefitted exponentially from the Bean-esque restoration job.
Boris gets the finger
Back in 2015, when current PM Boris Johnson was Foreign Secretary, he certainly divided opinion. Here he is giving a cheery wave to a member of the London public - who, er, doesn't seem to be returning the gesture.
Beyoncé live
In 2013, Beyoncé gave a typically MOMENTOUS performance at America's biggest sporting event, the Superbowl, bringing back the gals for a number of Destiny's Child tracks (two years before, she'd announced her first pregnancy on stage so, you know, she sets the bar high for herself). But after these pictures were published on Buzzfeed, her publicist got in touch to "respectfully request" they take them down, as they were "unflattering".The whole episode was hilarious.
Weasel rides woodpecker
Animals provide some of the best photographic lollage, and this one by amateur photographer Martin Le-May from Essex still tickles us five years on.Martin was taking a country walk with his wife Anne looking for the elusive green woodpecker when he came across the unusual scene. "I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst," he told the BBC. "I soon realised it was a woodpecker with some kind of small mammal on its back."I think we may have distracted the weasel as when the woodpecker landed it managed to escape and the weasel ran into the grass."Slightly less cute once you know the ferocious predator weasel was trying to kill and eat the bird, but hey, at least it got away, right?
Stingray photo bomb
This photo of four pals on their holidays to the Cayman Islands went viral in 2012, despite having been taken in 2007, and arguably launched the mainstream 'photobomb' craze which has spawns a thousand (less hilarious) similar versions. Sadly it's not exactly as it seems, as the ray is being held up by a guy behind the girls, but the looks on their unsuspecting faces are what truly makes this one of the most HILAIR photos of the decade.
Scariest child on the internet
No one quite knows the origins of this terrifying picture, of the sweetest little girl looking menacingly at the camera as the house in the background blazes – but she earned the name Disaster Girl because of it. Zoe Roth is now a bonafide social media star, with 15.3k Instagram followers.
Knickers the giant cow
Behold - Knickers, the giant cow. In 2018, the Australian steer - that's a neutered male, for any non-agriculture folks - went viral after this shot of him TOWERING above his lady-friends caught the attention of a number of different news outlets. At 1.94 metres and 220 stone, Knickers' size even saved him from the slaughterhouse."He just hangs around, he's part of the furniture," Knickers' owner, Geoff Pearson says. "Obviously he's gained some stardom – that's changed his identity a little bit."We'll have to see what happens with that."
Tinder poo date girl
Next time you're on a #awks first date, spare a thought for this unnamed woman who ended up in this position after what had been a lovely evening with a new fella. The details are still unclear, but she had to be rescued by the fire brigade after attempting to chuck her unflushing poo out of her date's bathroom window. But rather than out into the garden, the poo got caught between two un-opening glass panes. The amateur gymnast tried to reach in to retrieve it, and ended up getting stuck. Amazingly, the couple went on to have a second date, but it's not known if they are now married with babies.
Pete Doherty eats entire caff
Probably the most wholesome thing Pete Doherty has ever done, in 2018 he descended upon an unsuspecting Margate caff and took on their gut buster challenge, claiming he didn't have the money to pay for it. In UNDER TWENTY MINUTES, former Libertines frontman Pete wolfed down four rashers of bacon, four eggs, four sausages, hash browns, onion rings, bubble and squeak, two slices of thick bread, and a quarter-pounder burger and chips - and a strawberry Yazoo. Luckily for us, owner Mark Ezekiel, uploaded these glorious pictures to the business's Facebook page, for which we've been disproportionately grateful for ever since.
Jeremy Corbyn boob pat
In the interest of balance, here's the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, and Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry celebrating securing the borough of Islington in the 2017 general elections. Except, when Jez went into high-five his colleague, he missed, and ended up patting her bosom instead, in a moment which went on to be forever immortalised in 1,000 memes (and this list).
