Emma Chawner, 2019
Fast forward 12 years since her first audition and Emma revealed after swapping junk food for a healthy lifestyle she dropped 12 stone in just two years.
She says, "I’ve done every diet under the sun but, this time, it hasn’t been about following an army regime where I’m starving myself to become skinny overnight. I wanted to have long-lasting results, so it’s been more about changing my mindset towards food and having a balanced way of living – even if that takes longer to initially shift the weight.
"I started being healthier in November last year, making better choices with my meals and exercising more regularly. I’ve managed to drop three dress sizes since then. I don’t weigh myself now because I’m working out, so I know I’m putting on muscle, which weighs more.
"I’m thrilled with the results. I’m healthy but I’m not missing out on enjoying parties, or stopping myself from having treats when I want to."
Chanelle first found fame on Big Brother in 2007 as a Victoria Beckham-lookalike. Back then, she was just 19 and a size 6, but after giving birth in 2010 to her first son, Blakely, nine, with ex-Middlesborough footballer Matthew Bates, she went up to a size 20.
She then shed 4st in 2014 by following a strict diet, dropping to 8st and a size 8. But the diet wasn’t sustainable and, after giving birth to her son Frankie with ex-boyfriend and personal trainer Ryan Oates in June 2017, she went back up to a size 18, admitting she had a problem with overeating.
At the time, she was warned by doctors she was "on the brink of Type 2 diabetes", and had to take painkillers as her excessive weight had left her with pain in her knees and back, and even suffered slipped disks.
When Ryan walked out on her just two months after Frankie, now two, was born, Chanelle vowed to get a revenge body, admitting the split had left her with "zero confidence, no self-respect" and feeling "disgusting". But she insists her main motivation has always been health and happiness.
She says, "Before [when I’ve dieted], it was all about a mission to hit that target weight and restricting myself. It’s so gruelling that, once you reach your target, you just gorge.
"It’s like celebrity fitness DVDs – they’re snake oil. When have they ever worked? The celebs go on crash diets, go extreme, sell the DVD, then can’t maintain it – so the weight goes back on."
Now, the determined 5ft 4 star’s typical daily diet consists of a protein shake and banana for breakfast, tuna or chicken salad for lunch, fruit as snacks, and salmon or chicken with rice and veg for dinner.
She’s also been pushing herself to exercise five times a week and admits that, while she still wants to shed more pounds, she’s proud of what she has achieved.
She says, "I want to lose more weight. I don’t have a goal size or weight in mind but I just want to make sure I’m healthy and my body fat is at a good level. But I feel so much happier with how far I’ve come already, and I’m more confident looking at myself in the mirror.
"I’ve got a lot more energy too, which is strange because I’m eating less – but I’m fuelling my body with the right things. I don’t ever want to make those unhealthy diet choices, or punish my body with crash diets again. I want to be healthy 80 per cent of the time, with leeway for having treats that don’t lead to full-on binges."
