Mohamed El-Erian received a note from his 10-year-old daughter, detailing almost two dozen milestones in her short life that he had been absent for, and decided enough was enough.

‘It was a list that she had compiled of important events and activities that I had missed due to work commitments,’ he explained.

The list detailed everything his young daughter had gripes with, ‘From her first day at school and first soccer match of the season to a parent-teacher meeting and a Halloween parade.’

‘I felt awful and got defensive: I had a good excuse for each missed event! Travel, important meetings, an urgent phone call, sudden to-do,' he explained.

But despite reacting badly when he was first confronted, 56-year-old Erian said the note was a ‘wake up call’ that made him realise he wasn’t making enough time for his family.

Quitting his CEO role at the investment firm, Erian has said goodbye to 4.30am starts, and now spends his mornings preparing his daughter for school, dropping her off at the gate before taking up contract work in the financial sector.
