Actress Kellie Shirley, who welcomed twins Pearl and Louie last year, thinks Children SHOULD be encouraged to send Valentine’s Day cards – and sees it as a harmless tradition.
“Ah, Valentine's Day. Whether it be the flutters of first love, raging lusty hormones, or sixty years of marriage now nestled next to each another and holding hands in the local nursing home, gazing with twinkly eyes and gummy smiles, February 14th is a day of harmless fun for both the young or young at heart. And there's no better way to say 'I love you', than a waxy card, overpriced grub and a dodgy, boss eyed teddy bear, complete with red plastic hearts glued clumsily to his chest.
“With so much hate blasting out daily at us - stories about ISIS, war, famine etc on the telly, newspapers with headlines about acts of terror, and various radio stations reporting across our mad, bad, crazy world – I say thank god for St Valentine’s. A day simply dedicated to LOVE.
“I have many memories of my school days, writing hopeful handmade flirty cards, slipping them under lockers and ramming them into desks - the goal ultimately to try and get a snog from that special someone – anyone. Preferably in the football team.

“In fact, even before you reach secondary or high school, the laws of attraction are with us from the off. My nephew is 3 years old and already there's talk about girl (and boy) friends. Nursery, too, it seems is rife with the idea of love - although, thank goodness he's mainly got eyes for his plastic digger (and his Mama). When you're little, love is something that is pure, it's innocent and it’s sweet.
“With everything pretty much accessible online these days, an old fashioned sending of a card (even if it is only to your Mummy and Daddy), takes more time but means so much more.
"The buzz and excitement of receiving a thoughtful handwritten letter outweighs an e-card, email, WhatsApp, tweet or a text and is a very lovely and real feeling indeed.
“Sending a Valentine's when you’re young is an important part of growing up. Even if it’s just for the moment when, in adult life you bump into one of your card receivers, who by now has transformed from a dashing young thing, full of hope and promise, into an obese, bearded, cuddly creature. And that's just me!
“It's important for all of us from an early age to feel love, be loved and to love. Love when it's reciprocated is the BEST feeling. Bring on that warm, gooey sensation inside. It can also serve us well as an important learning curve - especially when your neatly penned valentines is openly chucked in the bin in front of everyone (top tip: worth declaring loudly it was a joke anyway..!)
“This day should be embraced by us all, young and old. I'm sure the First Dates restaurant is booked to the rafters this Sunday, with hopeful singletons on the look out with a huge net, ready to catch their soul mate.
“It starts from being a toddler and it stays with us until we die.
"Love is not what makes the world go around, it's what makes the ride worthwhile..."

Model and mum-of-two Nicola McLean is totally against the idea of children sending Valentine’s Day cards – and insists we should simply let them be kids for as long as possible.
“Being a child is hard. School can be tough on many and I personally think encouraging them to send Valentine’s Day cards at such a young age is ludicrous – and just another way of making them grow up too quickly.
“Imagine being one of the only kids in the class to not receive a card; just like going through the trauma of not being picked for a sports team, I believe it can have a serious negative impact on a child’s self-esteem.
“There are going to be boys and girls who do not get a card and, while some may not be fussed, the schools are setting them up to deal with rejection at such a young age.
“I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day but I struggle with rejection at 34-years-old, so if I don’t get a card this year I’ll be fuming!
“My boys Rocky and Striker are nine and five, and I’ve never really spoken to them about the whole thing. But I know that, particularly in Rocky’s year group, there are already girls who feel under pressure, be it from social media or celebrities, and at that age they don’t need another reason to feel bad about themselves.
Nicola with sons Striker and Rocky
“If Rocky did come home and tell me he wanted to send a girl, or a boy, a Valentine’s card I would listen to his reasoning and then explain that it’s inappropriate at his age. At nine-years-old I don’t think it’s right for him to have a girlfriend, and Valentine’s Day is a romantic thing.
“Rocky has a lot of girl fiends, and they’re always over having play dates, but that’s just because he spent a lot of time with me when he was a younger. His dad Tom [Williams, the footballer] was away playing a lot when Rocky was growing up so he naturally gets on well with girls now.
“And I have to say it’s down to the parents. No kid in this land would think to send a card. It’s one step away from the over-sexualisation of children – I can’t stand these little girls in bikinis or slogan t-shirts, and encouraging them to send Valentine’s Day cards is a way of forcing them to be adults. They’re only babies once!
“If Rocky or Striker came home and said the school had asked them to send cards, I would be so upset and I would raise an issue.
“I’m so passionate about this and I just want to put a ‘stop’ button on my kids at the ages they’re at. I find it so weird that some parents seem to be obsessed with making them old before their time!”
