Why La Rioja is the perfect romantic getaway destination

Fancy having a wine tasting experience abroad? Then Campo Viejo in La Rioja is definitely one to go to. Personally whenever I buy wine I just get the cheapest bottle from the supermarket and mix it with lemonade (it's not great but it does the job). So during the trip to the winery they explain all about the different wines and how they're different varietals of the Tempranillo grape - who knew?At Campo Viejo can either book a private tour or a group one, which ever works best for you and your other half. And a fun fact about the winery is that it has all-female leadership and winemaking team – girl power!

During your time their you'll see the vineyards, visit the production area (their wine testing room and how they package the wine), the bottle and barrel rooms and taste three of their wines and an appetiser in their fancy wine bar. A holiday surrounded by wine? Why wouldn't you want this for a romantic getaway?

We've never been in a room surrounded by some much wine and honestly, it was like heaven.

The majority of the winery is actually underground which means while you're outside on the terrace, all you can see is the stunning scenery of mountains, fields and where all their grapes grow.The winery has a idyllic atmosphere and judging by these views we're pretty sure you can see why.

Campo Viejo, the largest producer of Rioja in the region and the UK's number one red wine brand, is honestly perfect for those romantic Instagram snaps you'll want to upload.

Not only are you treated to wine but you'll even get a real experience of food and wine pairing. During our trip each meal was picked to compliment the flavours of the different wine; so we got to try cured ham, aioli, local bread and pan con tomate - aka tomato salsa - with the Tempranillo. It was shortly followed by paella with chicken and saffron paired with the Reserva.Then we finished the meal off with millefeuille of pastry and confectioners custard alongside the Gran Reserva.It was DIVINE.

Logrono, aka the capital of La Rioja, is the home to lots of tapas restaurants so why not have a date night going from restaurant to restaurant trying Spain's mouth-watering meals. You'll get a real taste of the Spanish culture by mingling with the locals and taking a tapas tour in the area.

During the tapas tour I went on, we ate suckling pig and artichoke and honestly it's one of the best things I've had in my entire life. It was paired with Campo Viejo's Cava and it's safe to say it's quickly become my favourite Cava (seriously!).We also got to try a mushroom stack with shrimp and a 'secret' garlic marinade alongside a subtly spicy Tempranillo. Now while mushrooms aren't my absolute favourite, with the garlic and shrimp it seriously was delicious. (True story - I burnt my mouth because I was trying to eat it so quickly).Our last stop was a cosy restaurant called El Rincon De Alberto and we tried a yummy steak and glass of Gran Reserva.

In the capital surrounded by the locals you'll get a real feel of Spanish culture; how incredible their tapas meals are, how people head out for dinner at 10pm (basically our bed time), how the locals stand and drink in the street (you would not get that in England) and of course, the history behind the city.

If you go on a tour of Logrono's City Centre you'll discover the rich history of the town – including the many churches in the town and you can even follow the infamous pilgrimage walk to St James.

Also they have Spanish Siesta which means you get a lovely mid afternoon nap – what's not to love?

Just outside of La Rioja is Bilbao. While there, you can take a tram ride into the town of the city that's full of independent, high street and high end shops. They're all definitely worth checking out, especially the brands that are from Spain as they're much cheaper than in the UK. It's a win win situation, tbh.

If you're an art fanatic then the Guggenheim Museum is definitely one to visit; it holds incredible art work from Picasso to Van Gogh and fun fact – it's some of the artworks first time leaving America and going into Europe. Also have you ever seen a huge flower dog in the UK? Nope? Us neither.
