According to reports from The Chronicle Live, there was a disappointing turnout at the first round of auditions at Newcastle on Wednesday, which took place at St. James’ Park.

Producers opened the doors at 9am and by 10.30am every hopeful had been checked into audition - despite the venue being open for audition until 6pm.

Well that must have been awkward…

The X Factor tweeted about the auditions on the day encouraging fans to come down and audition to be the next big star, saying: "NEWCASTLE: Want to see your name up in lights? The first step is the #XFactorAuditions so come to @NUFC today!"

The barriers - which are normally used to hold back thousands of wannabes - were left unused and piled up against the wall.

This is a stark difference to the turn out in the Geordie Capital two years ago, which saw thousands turn up for their shot at fame.

However, a spokesperson for X Factor has said: "The numbers are higher than last year for Newcastle, so it isn’t a poor turnout”.

Previous Geordie X Factor winners include Joe McElderry, Little Mix’s Jade and James Arthur.

Jade - an auditionee this year - who is a checkout assistant from Tyneside, arrived at 6am expecting to see a large queue of hopefuls waiting to audition; but she was the first there.

Some have speculated that the poor turnout is due to Cheryl quitting this year's show. But despite Cheryl’s exit, the judging line up for this year is still yet to be confirmed.

The next round of auditions are being held in Maidstone on Saturday and London on Sunday, let’s hope they have a better turnout!
