Paige Turley on therapy
Paige previously opened up about how she had tragically lost her childhood friend, Jamie Aitchison – who she poignantly described as “the light in a dark room” – to suicide at just 20 years old. Channelling her grief into raising money and awareness in memory of her late pal, Paige spoke to Closer about the trauma.
“When Jamie died, it really struck us all because it was so unexpected. He was so young and had his whole life ahead of him. For the first few weeks I was in shock, and I was quiet over the festive period. New Year was really tough, but Finn was so supportive. He didn’t know Jamie personally, but he was there for me as much as possible.”
“It’s made me more determined to use my platform to speak about mental health," she continued, "particularly among men. Guys are not as good as girls at saying, ‘Let’s grab a coffee’, but trying to get time together where there’s no alcohol involved is so important.”
The star set herself the challenge of running the London Landmarks Marathon to raise money for Mental Health UK and to shine a light on male suicide.
She explains, “I want to keep Jamie’s memory alive, there was much I’m sure he still wanted to do. I struggled to run just 3k before this, but it’s had such a positive impact on my own headspace.”
Paige has been open about her own struggles with mental health since leaving Love Island, recently admitting she had suffered with “low moods and anxiety” and even considered walking away from the spotlight after being catapulted to fame.
She explains, “For months I didn’t realise I was struggling with anxiety. It wasn’t until someone else pointed out to me that some of my actions weren’t normal behaviour that I realised something wasn’t right. When I felt anxious, I would have really shuddery breathing, I’d start to shake and my hands would tremble. I’d suffer with paranoia, and avoid any kind of social situation, that’s when people around me started to pick up on how I was behaving and made me aware. It was all quite surreal. The pandemic made it worse, all that time behind closed doors and not having to face the world, and then going back out to it all was daunting and I really struggled.”
But thanks to regular talking therapy, Paige admits she’s in a much better place now. “I’ve been in therapy for a while, and I’d recommend it to everyone,” she says. “It’s been great for me and has taught me coping mechanisms. My anxiety definitely heightened after Love Island because everything was so magnified, but my therapy made me realise that I’d had it before then. My therapist took me right back to my childhood, which gave me an understanding about why I do certain things.”
She adds, “For a while, I just thought I’d lost the plot, but therapy has made me realise that I have a right to be heard and get better. It’s broken things down, and taught me that the world isn’t that bad or scary.”
