It was only a matter of time before Katie Hopkins, divisive social commentator and former Daily Mail columnist, was deported.
Sadly, being a British National, it was UK shores that she found herself winging her way back to earlier this year after she was booted off Australia’s Big Brother VIP 2 before she’d even set foot in the house.
The series – which is essentially the Down Under version of Celebrity Big Brother – wrapped in November with Survivor star Luke Toki crowned victorious. However there’s no doubt headlines this side of the pond were dominated by Katie Hopkins’ premature expulsion from the series (and, you know, the country), after she boasted about breaking the country’s strict quarantine rules and mocking restrictions. Katie even claimed that she answered the door naked and without a mask when staff delivered food to the doorstep of makeshift quarantine camps where arrivals into the country are required to stay.
It would speak louder volumes if we the UK hadn’t voted her runner up on the 2015 series of Celebrity Big Brother, but nonetheless, it got us thinking about some of the more controversial removals from Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother’s history – and, boy, have there been some juicy ones.
In no particular order, here are some of the most memorable ejections from the Diary Room exit (and one over the garden wall) ever.

Big Brother's REMOVED housemates
Andrew Tate - Big Brother 17
Andrew Tate was ejected from the 2017 series after footage emerged in the press of him hitting a woman with a belt. Although he insisted the act was consensual and that violence against women was "abhorrent", he later went on to say that victims of Harvey Weinstein should take "personal responsibility" for their attacks so, yeah, there's that.
Aaron Frew - Big Brother 16
Aaron Frew lost his place in the 2016 BB house after exposing himself and making repeated unwanted sexual advances on fellow housemate Joel Williams. After he was called to the Diary Room and Big Brother explained why he was being removed, he said, "I'm so sorry. Oh my God. I can't believe it."I'm so sorry. I really am. I put my hands up to it, I didn't mean for it to get that far."I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry for everyone. I'm sorry for Joel, I'm sorry mate. I'm so sorry for Big Brother for wasting your time."
Alexandra De Gale - Big Brother 9
Alexandra was removed from the house in 2009 after threatening a fellow housemates with her "gangster friends" on the outside.Following her exit, she gave her first and only interview to heat and said, "Being hated isn't the nicest feeling - but I'll deal with it."I don't feel I threatened anyone but I think it was for the best."Seeing what's been written I don't know whether I would have been strong enough to come out to boos. But I don't agree with Big Brother removing me. I was misinterpreted, misunderstood."
Kayleigh Morris - Big Brother 18
Kayleigh had already done the round on reality TV when she entered the Big Brother 2018 house along with a cast of semi-famous housemates including fellow Ex on The Beach star Chanelle McCleary and Dreamboy Lotan Carter. She was removed after a heated argument and threats toward Chanelle.
Lotan Carter
Along with Kayleigh, Lotan was removed from the 2018 house after a particularly nasty spat with Chanelle McLeary. He's now a regular on scraping-the-barrell reality TV and appeared on the first series of 'Celebrity' Ex on the Beach the same year.
Dennis McHugh - Big Brother 9
Another result of a nasty argument, "egotistical, flamboyant, and competitive" Dennis - as he described himself in his VT – was removed after spitting in the face of housemate Mohamed Mohamed during a disagreement.
Emma Greenwood - Big Brother 5
One of the earliest and most explosive arguments in the Big Brother Hall of Fame, Emma was ejected after instigating the infamous 2004 Fight Night, which also saw all housemates bar four issued official warnings and Victor Ebuwa ordered to see a psychologist in the house.
Kitten Pinder - Big Brother 5
She was in the same explosive series as Emma, but Kitten didn't make it to Fight Night as she'd already been removed just a week in for consistent rule breaking. When Big Brother asked her to leave the house immediately, she initially refused, leading the Prize Fund being lowered and housemates intervened to get her out. LOLZ.
Daley Ojuederie - Big Brother 14
Daley was removed from BB14 - the same series that launched Rylan's ex Dean Neal to fame, FYI – after he was moved to a luxury annexe with his love interest Hazel and ended up making physical threats during an argument. Explaining his ejected to their fellow housemates afterward, Dan said, "On Sunday night there was a physical threat, a threat of violence on Hazel by Daley, Big Brother has intervened and taken it very seriously. Daley has been removed."It wasn't Hazel's decision; we've spoken in depth about it yesterday and today. Hazel doesn't want to talk to everyone because she doesn't want to keep repeating herself going over it."
Emily Parr - Big Brother 8
Emily Parr was ejected from the BB8 House after making a racist slur while "joking" with housemate Charlie Uchea. Despite claiming she "would never offend anyone" and that the term "wasn't offensive", Emily was immediately removed and the controversy led to BB to implement new and specific rules related to the word.
Emma Jensen - Big Brother 17
Emma entered the house as part of the first ever set of twins in 2017 but was removed due to rule breaking, leaving her twin Victoria to continue as a single housemate. "Emma has been removed from the Big Brother House for attempting to break out on more than one occasion," said Big Brother."Emma was unable to live within the confines of the Big Brother House and abide by the rules and therefore forfeited her place as a Housemate."
Ellis Hillon - Big Brother 19
Ellis was the final housemate to be removed from the Big Brother franchise in 2018, within just hours of the show launching. Channel 5 said, "As a result of our investigation into offensive and unacceptable posts on social media, Ellis Hillon has been removed from the Big Brother House."

Christopher Biggins - CBB 18
Actor and TV presenter Christopher Biggins was removed from the CBB house in 2016 after repeatedly expressing biphobic views. He said, "Gays had been really badly treated, then suddenly they became respected."Then a killer disease came that was attributed to homosexuals. I think it was a bisexual disease to be honest. What they didn't realise were a lot of bisexuals that went to those [third world] countries and had sex with those people and brought it back to America."It wasn't the first time he'd expressed the views, receiving a warning after saying, "I think the worst type though is, I'm afraid to say, the bisexuals. What it is is people not wanting to admit they are gay."
Katie Hopkins - CBB 15
Katie Hopkins may have done well on the UK Celebrity Big Brother 2015, coming (somehow) runner up to Katie Price's first place, but in 2021 she was axed before she even entered Australia's Big Brother VIP after boasting online about breaking quarantine and mocking the country's strict isolation rules. She was swiftly deported back to the UK, who didn't want her either.
Jeremy Jackson - CBB 15
Former Baywatch reboot star Jeremy Jackson was (rightly) booted off after making unwanted sexual advances on fellow housemate Chloe Goodman and opened her dressing gown while she was comforting him in the toilet while he threw up. She said, "That's not OK, I'm leaving now", before leaving the bathroom in tears."He went to my dressing gown top and put my boob out."
Tila Tequila - CBB 16
US glamour model and social media influencer Tila Tequila was removed from the CBB 16 house just 48 hours after her arrival, after it was revealed she was a Nazi sympathiser and had posted numerous pro-Hitler posts to social media. "Unfortunately, Channel 5 and Endemol did not know about the views and attitudes Tila had expressed in social media postings prior to her involvement in Celebrity Big Brother," said bosses after her immediate ejection from the house."The views Tila had expressed, and permitted to remain uncorrected, are totally unacceptable and, accordingly, her continued involvement in the programme was untenable."
Stephen Bear - CBB 18
We know, WE KNOW, Stephen Bear went on to win this series of the show (WHY, please?) but let's not forget he was forcibly restrained by security and removed from the house after a terrifying outburst where he smashed mirrors and tried to kick the Diary Room doors in. He was sent to sleep in another room for the night and viewers expressed concern over his return to the main house the following day. Despite this, he went on to win the series because the voting public clearly have very short memories.
Rodrigo Alves - CBB 22
'Human Ken Doll' Rodrigo was removed without explanation halfway through CBB 22 (the last one - sniff). He was later banned from the final and BBOTS after reportedly breaking "a serious rule" in the house, with Dan Osborne later saying he'd "done something inappropriate" and viewers calling for his removal from early on in the series.
Ken Morley - CBB 15
Former Corrie actor and former national treasure Ken Morley was removed from the house after repeatedly expressing racist views, with his son Roger forced to apologise for his dad's behaviour on social media.

Despite Big Brother appearing on UK screens for nearly two decades beforeit was axed in 2018 and making its debut at the dawn of the infamously problematic noughties, it’s safe to say that it set an admiral precedent for its no tolerance approach to rule-breakers, and has historically taken racist language, aggression and sexual harassment seriously.
While we’ve seen our fair share or upsetting sexual behaviour on UK series (remember Rodrigo Alves? Shudder), Australia’s 2006 went down in history for the now infamous ‘Turkey slap’ incident – where two male housemates, under the guise of ‘joking’, held down a female housemate and rubbed their penises on her face – an incident which has now rightly been called out as assault.
Yana Groves, a producer on the show when the incident occurred, said at the time that it was “a huge lesson for the industry” and added, “It was pretty scary. It was something that happened so unexpectedly that I think it rocked the reality world. The producers did everything they could in that situation – to do the right thing and take the right steps.”
