McFly: where are they now?

Our favourite band from the '00s... Obviously

McFly

Last year, McFly decided to re-record their song It's All About You as a charity video for the NHS. It features the bandmates and their families singing and dancing from their homes, as a lovely tribute to the work the NHS do.

They have since recently released a new album, Young Dumb Thrills, and around the same time a documentary aired on ITV about the 'truth' of them almost splitting up.

Luckily, McFly are still together so we thought we’d updated you on what the members of the band - Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd - are doing with their careers now...

Dougie Poynter was known for being the bassist and co-vocalist for the band. He was definitely the heartthrob of McFly, giving us 'the boy next door' vibes.

Still known for being a vocalist and bassist for McFly, Dougie has also had a career in fashion, having his runway debut walking down the catwalk for Joshua Kane's fashion show, and then modelling for Dolce & Gabanna. He also founded a new band, Ink, in 2018 but his time with them was short lived when he went back to McFly full time in 2019. In their 2020 documentary McFly: All About us, Dougie opened up about his problematic relationship with the anti-anxiety medication Valium, admitting he knew he needed to address his addiction after taking a 'near lethal' dose of the drug. "On the one hand I felt inspired because friends in LA would take me to see other bands and stuff," he said. "On the other hand, I was like, 'But my band's broken and it's all my fault'. Valium was a way of just making all that disappear."Outside of his music career, Dougie was crowned King of the Jungle in 2011's I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and penning his own kids book called Plastic Sucks! as part of his ongoing commitment to environmental campaigning.

Harry Judd is still the drummer of McFly, but during their break Harry tried his hand at dancing, winning series nine of Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 - the same year his bandmate Dougie took home the Jungle Crown. Winning the series alongside Aliona Vilani might have ignited his love of dance but it was far from the only time Harry flexed his moves on the floor. The following year he took part in a Sport Relief Special, Strictly Come Dancing Underwater AND won the Christmas special in 2015. Away from performing, Harry is a dedicated family man and dad of three. After struggling to conceive with his wife Izzy – who he met whilst she was working as a violinist during their 2005 concert tour – Harry announced that they were welcoming their first child, Lola, with the help of IVF in 2015. "Izzy and I are so happy and feel truly blessed to be able to share with you that we are expecting out very own little miracle Baby Judd," he said. Their first son Kit was born in 2017 and in October 2021 they welcomed a second son, Lockie.

Danny remains the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band, but he did go on to having his own solo career. He released his own singles and toured the UK in 2019. Danny has also been one of the coaches on The Voice Kids UK since its conception in 2017. As well as his role as a judge on The Voice kids, Danny's been heavily involved in sports and fitness outside of the band and competed in Soccer Aid – the charity match that raises money for Unicef children's charity – four times. Speaking to GQ about using sport as a kind of therapy, he said, "Anxiety comes in many different forms and getting to the bottom of how and why it manifests has been a real journey for me. Mine is all rooted in people leaving: my dad when I was 18, the death of my grandparents, my mate passing away. It's always those triggers and I've only really come to understand it in the last year."For me, the feeling is very physical. My heart rate goes crazy. I get this gut-wrenching feeling and I feel like I can't breathe. I've found fitness is the one thing that really lets you take control of a situation you know isn't good for your body. If I could take a moment to forget about everything else and at least feel physically fit enough to get through this, I could start to fix things; I could be prepared for the raised heart rate and all the other symptoms that come with it."

Tom is still part of the band, but has taken on many solo careers. The main one being, him becoming an author. He has a series of children's books that are co-written with his bandmate Dougie. This was followed by his first solo novel, The Christmasaurus, which he then turned into a musical to be performed in London. Since then, he has also released a trilogy of books with his wife, Giovanna Fletcher. Tom is continuing to write novels, some of which are being released in 2021. Currently Tom is competing in 2021 series of Strictly Come Dancing with his professional dance partner Amy Dowden. Following in Harry's footsteps, Tom admitted there were big shoes to fill and said, "I've always felt like there'd be pressure if I ever did strictly. It's been a part of our history. It was an amazing time for our band when [Harry] won, so it has been his thing for a while. I feel like there will be pressure for me to go far."I haven't been able to stop him talking about Strictly for 10 years but I don't know whether I should trust his advice or if he is trying to secretly steer me in the wrong direction because he's quite competitive."Tom was forced to miss the last few dates of McFly's Young Dumb Thrills tour due to Strictly commitments, and is having to delay recording his final parts for the bands upcoming tour as he's so busy with dance rehearsals.
