What glasses are best for cocktails?

What better way to get our best cocktail advice than from the experts? Roop Kahlon, the in-house mixologist and industry expert of VIP Bottles, gave us the low-down on what cocktail glasses we need to be using.

Firstly, we asked Roop why our glasses are so important in the cocktail-making process. “Glassware is one of the most underrated parts of the drinks making process. The glassware is not just a vessel to hold the liquid. The shape, size and weight also give an impression of what to expect before taking a sip. When looking to purchase your glassware, the weightier the better. This is a sign of quality and durability," he says.

What about specifics, though? He spills: "If you’re using aromatics like lemon and orange peels, use a taller, thinner glass to help accentuate the scent. Champagne flutes are shaped to allow the aroma to travel to your nose once the bubbles pop at the surface."

"For the more discerning drinkers that like their spirits neat, there’s nothing quite like a weighty rocks glass, also known as a short or tumbler. This glassware allows you to add ice to dilute, a mixer or nothing at all, which makes it the perfect versatile partner with a premium spirit.

"Fans of more refreshing ‘tall’ cocktails need to look for a Collins glass. These are great for the classics such as Mojitos and Long Island Iced Teas. They can also be used for everyday vodka, lime, lemonades and gin and tonics.

"It’s difficult to talk about cocktails without mentioning the Martini glass, also known as the cocktail glass. This iconic glassware was named after the infamous cocktail itself. If your glassware collection is looking crowded, a wine glass is a good alternative to a Martini glass, as the stem keeps your hands from warming up your cocktail too quickly.”

Well, that's it then. We'll take them all.

Martini glasses: Maybe the most obvious cocktail glass, you'll definitely know it. Usually filled with gin and vermouth and the star of this cocktail emoji: 🍸.

Highball glasses: Aka Collins glasses, usually a tall, round glass that looks like a cylinder. Perf for Mojitos and Dark n' Stormy cocktails.

Coupe glasses: Those ones that you put champers in when you're feeling extttraaa fancy. Also works as glasses for a Manhattan and Gimlet. If you're a fan of Pornstar Martini's, you'll find they're usually served in these too. Don't forget the passion fruit!

Margarita glasses: Those delicious tequila-y drinks fit perfectly in a margarita glass. Like an upturned sombrero, line the rim with salt and pour in your dangerous drink.

Lowball glasses: Also known as Old Fashioned or 'rocks' glasses, these are low glasses that are usually filled with Negroni's and Whiskey. Top them up with ice to enjoy.

Shot glasses: As it says on the tin. It's debatable whether it counts as a cocktail glass but we'll go along with it anyway.
