Wayne Rooney has been given a two-year driving ban as well as 100 hours' community service after pleading guilty to drink driving at Stockport Magistrates' Court

The former England footballing captain, whose wife Coleen is expecting their fourth child, apologised for his "unforgivable lack of judgement" in court today after being pulled over by police on 1 September whilst driving a car owned by single mum Laura Simpson.

Laura, 29, told the MailOnline that she "would have" slept with the footballer if they hadn't been pulled over.

Wayne appeared in court today - wearing his wedding ring - to plead guilty for drink driving after being pulled over behind the wheel of Ms Simpson's car in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at 2am.

He was pulled over as the car had a faulty brake light, but was found to be almost three times over the legal limit.

The dad-of-three was slapped with a 24-month driving ban and was ordered to complete 100 hours' community service as part of a 12-month community order.

After the plea, a statement from Wayne was issued in which he apologised for "letting his family down" and for his "unforgivable lack of judgement."

It read: "Following today's court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgment in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.

"I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

"Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service."

He also posted the statement to his official website and tweeted it.

His wife Coleen did not attend the hearing.

Coleen was initially said to be considering a divorce from Wayne, but is now reportedly feeling "sympathetic" towards her husband of nine years.

A source told The Sun: "Coleen has been furious at Wayne. But the more she learns, the more sympathetic she is to Wayne's version of events.

"She wasn't impressed with Laura's TV appearance. The girl's story just keeps changing, while Wayne's remains the same."

This comes after Laura backtracked on her original comments to the MailOnline after telling them that she'd "kissed and cuddled" Wayne, appearing on This Morning to confirm her side of the story.

She said: "In my eyes I did nothing wrong. It's been blown out of proportion what was about to happen, well apparently going to happen.

"I feel like I've been thrown under the bus. Basically, I just asked Coleen to give me a call. I told her everything I've told you. I told her nothing happened. I don't feel like I did anything wrong. It was on impulse, getting into the car... Going home."
