Madonna has opened up about the dangers of social media on self-esteem and has warned her daughter Lourdes not to compare herself to her mother’s success.
The singer, who recently celebrated turning 60, admitted she was happy that she hit the limelight before the widespread use of social media apps like Instagram.
In an interview with The Sun, Madonna said, “You get caught up in comparing yourself to others. I think Instagram is made to make you feel bad. People are really a slave to winning people’s approvals.”
Madonna, who has 14 million followers on Instagram, went on to take aim at the toxic nature of social media.

She said, “So I say to my daughter, 'You weren’t put on this earth to be me, you were put on this earth to be you. You be you.’”

The hitmaker went on to add that she encouraged Lourdes not to be “consumed with the way you look” but to use her platform to be a “good role model for other young women.”
The 22-year-old is the eldest of Madonna’s six children. She also shares 18-year-old Rocco with ex-husband of eight years, director Guy Ritchie, and adopted children David and Mercy, both 13, and Stelle and Estere, both six.
The star appeared on the Graham Norton show recently and confessed that she believes her children may have had “less challenging” lives if their mother wasn’t a superstar.
