Former Real Housewives of Cheshire star and wife of Paddy McGuinness has revealed at 33 years old that she’s autistic.

The mum of three has always been open about the difficulties of parenting three young children with autism. First their twins Leo and Penelope were diagnosed with the condition when they were toddlers and then their youngest daughter Felicity was also confirmed to be on the autistic spectrum.

Now, for the first time, Christine has revealed that she, too, lives with the condition and said, “I have been confirmed as autistic. It’s strange, but I’ve noticed there are little hints throughout my life that I’m autistic and more like my children than I ever could have imagined.

“My issues with food, my social ¬struggles, how hard I find it to make friends and stay focused, and my indecisiveness. The way I float through life reminds me of how my eldest daughter Penelope is.

“It all makes sense now. And as much as I’m not totally surprised, it’s still been emotional for me to accept, but it’s a relief as well.”

Writing in her autobiography, A Beautiful Nightmare, about receiving her diagnosis in August, she continued, “It was a lot to take in and once my appointment was over, I broke down in floods of tears. I think it’s because the news conjured up a mixture of emotions and while I’m not totally shocked and it’s a relief, I’m just really sad for my younger self.

This sweet potato hash is my take on my mums recipe for a traditional potato hash, made with plenty of vegetables rich in bioflavonoids and succulent shin beef. Best of all, it takes minimal prep and requires minimal cooking as you just throw it all in one big pot and leave it to do its thing!"

While numbers vary, it’s generally accepted that autism is more easily and commonly diagnoses in men than women and it’s not unusual for women to be diagnoses in adulthood, like Christine.

This is because autism is primarily diagnosed through behavioural traits and the gender health gap means that these behaviours are most commonly recorded and observed in boys than girls. There’s also what’s known as “camouflaging” – the theory that women on the autistic spectrum are more capable of masking socio-communicative impairments and are better at “fitting in” with their peers.

Back in 2019, Christine opened up exclusively to Closer about her home life, saying “Having children is difficult as it is – let alone having children with additional needs. I can’t sugar-coat it.

“Daily life can be challenging – everything has to run very smoothly, and it’s a juggling act. Everything in life I now have to double, triple and quadruple check before I do it. There’s a routine and a lot of compromise.

“I could definitely do with an extra pair of hands. But for now I’m just doing it, getting on with it, trying to keep a smile on my face. We’re doing all right.

“[But] Autism is a part of them, and if they weren’t autistic, they wouldn’t be who they are. There are positives to it – they’re all incredibly intelligent, which is crazy because me and Paddy just aren’t academic at all! Leo loves numbers, Penelope is incredibly creative and Felicity can speak so well for her age. We’ve got three little geniuses.”
