Brian May reveals Freddie Mercury lost a foot as he battled AIDS

Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury lost a foot during his battle with AIDS, according to his close friend and Queen guitarist Brian May.

The musical icon was diagnosed with the disease in the 1980's but didn't actually announce he had contracted the illness until 24 hours before he eventually died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991.

Speaking to The Sunday Times in 2017, Brian opened up about the impact of Freddie's death, revealing it was "tragic."

He said, "The problem was actually his foot, and tragically there was very little left of it.

"Once, he showed it to us at dinner. And he said, 'Oh Brian, I'm sorry I've upset you by showing you that'."

Brian went on to suggest Freddie may have survived the disease if he had lived long enough to access new AIDS treatment introduced in the early 90s. However, it was sadly released just after he passed away.

He confessed, "He missed by just a few months. If it had been a bit later he would have still been with us, I'm sure."

"Hmmm. You can't do 'what if' can you? You can't go there because therein lies madness."

Freddie spent the last two years of his life away from the media, living a secluded life, only seeing his friends and family at his home in London.

His last appearance with the band was in Queen's music video for the song These Are The Days Of Our Lives in May 1991.
