The cast have been dropping hints for months. But last week, Friends fans were finally put out of their misery when the six main cast members – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc – confirmed on Instagram that they’d all signed up for a one-off unscripted reunion show, saying, “It’s happening”.
And insiders tell Closer that Jen’s ex Brad Pitt – with whom she’s formed anincreasingly close friendshipsince their reconciliation at her fiftieth birthday bash in February last year – played a major role in convincing her to commit.
A source says, “There had been so many meetings trying to get the Friends gang back together over the years. Courteney was at the centre of trying to push things forward, but Jen had always been the most resistant, as she wanted to focus on her movie career and not look backwards.
“But after reuniting with Brad at her birthday last year, she asked him for advice. He said he thought it would be a great idea to honour their success and that fans still hold the show in such high regard. He told her it feels like the right time to get back together and encouraged her change of heart. He advised her to say ‘yes’ when everyone got together in October to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary.”
Jen, 51, and Brad, 56,broke up in 2005, after rumours he’d become close to his Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star Angelina Jolie, with the pair going on to marry.

Following Brad’s split from Angelina, 44, in 2016, and Jen’s divorce from Justin Theroux, 48, in 2018, the pair sparked rumours they were about to get back together after meeting up at the Sunset Tower Hotel in LA last year.
And although Jen was recently connected to film director Will Speck, while Brad has been linked to numerous women, including actress Alia Shawkat, rumours of romance have persisted. The speculation reached a peak earlier this year when they put on a very public display of affection at the SAG Awards in January, with reports that Brad could not tear his eyes away from his ex-wife as she accepted her award for Best Female Actor.
Sources say the former couple – who used to run their own successful production company, Plan B, when they were married – still trust each other’s professional judgement and have missed working with one another.

She has loved them reconnecting and talking over ideas for new projects. Brad knows how special Friends was to Jen, and she feels he’s part of the history of the show after he made a cameo appearance towards the end. Having Brad’s support for the reunion meant a lot to her.
“As it stands, they just have a close friendship – but everyone in their circle is hoping that, one day, they might get back together, because the bond between them seems stronger than ever.”

The one-off special of the sitcom – which originally aired from 1994 until 2004 – will be available on HBO Max in May. It’ll be filmed at Stage 24 at Warner Bros Studio in California, where the original series was made – although it doesn’t appear the group will be in character.
The source adds, “At this stage, it’s just going to be the cast getting back together, giving in-depth interviews and revealing secrets from the show that fans will love. There may even be some fun skits involved. But the door is now wide open for filming new episodes once they see how this goes. Despite her initial concerns, Jen is thrilled it’s happening, and she’s grateful to Brad for encouraging her to do it.”
