TMZ reports that Angelina filed legal documents last Tuesday (15th September) citing 'irreconcilable differences' and has reportedly asked for full custody of their six children Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox.

Angelina is said to be being advised by Laura Wasser, who most recently represented Johnny Depp during his divorce from Amber Heard. She is believed to not be asking for spousal support.

Sources connected with the couple told TMZ that Angelina's decision to file for divorce was over a dispute over their children.

"Angelina's decision to file has to do with the way Brad was parenting the children, she was extremely upset with his methods," the source said.

TMZ sources also state that Angelina became "fed up" with Brad's consumption of weed and possibly alcohol, and mixed with - what she believes is "an anger problem" - felt it became dangerous for the children.

There was no third party involved.

Brad Pitt has now released a statement, confirming the news.

In a statement released to PEOPLE, Brad has stated that his primary focus is the 'well-being' of his children.

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," he said in the statement.

"I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Fans of the couple have been questioning whether things between the couple have been strained as they have not been seen or been pictured together in months.

They were last pictured in November last year, promoting their film By The Sea, a drama about a failing marriage.

Despite the film's focus on marriage troubles, Angelina was forced to deny that the film was a reflection of themselves.

She honestly told the Telegraph: “Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film.

“To be clear: we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space, but the problems in the movie aren’t our specific problems.”

Brad Pitt's first marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston ended in 2005 as a result of his relationship with Angelina Jolie, after both starring in the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The pair married in 2014.

Angelina denied all reports of an alleged affair whilst he was still married to Jennifer.

At the time, she said:“To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive.

“I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn’t be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife.”
