As we enter into a new year, it's time to get excited about what the next 12 months will bring. For beauty buffs, you'll be glad to know that there are some pretty exciting trends heading our way.

Light Years, founded by Lucie Greene, produces a report each year that details the 100 biggest shapers of consumer behaviour for the following year. In 2020's report, the beauty category looks to be tackling all sorts of issues that have previously plagued the industry.

Here are some of the other trends we can expect to see in 2020:

Zeroing in on sunscreen

People are taking SPF seriously now that they’re more educated on how the sun’s rays can affect their skin. In 2020, we’ll be seeing more sunscreen products than ever before, with brands using innovative formulas which don’t cause harm to marine life.

Radical inclusivity

In recent years, inclusivity and diversity have exploded into the beauty scene, and consumers are more aware than ever before of celebrating their own and others’ individuality. Say goodbye to airbrushing and coverups because realness is in, and it’s forcing a new visual dialogue around what beauty truly means.

Water activated beauty

Can you imagine a world without water readily available at your fingertips? The United Nations warns that 700 million people worldwide could be affected by “intense water scarcity” by 2030, which means reducing water usage wherever possible. Brands in the beauty industry have responded, with many vowing to reduce usage in products and with new companies bringing even more waterless and water activated products to market.

Beauty fluidity

Get ready to see more gender-free and gender-fluid products on shelves. Unisex fragrances, makeup and skincare marks changes in attitude from consumers, and brick-and-mortar stores will soon be catching up with this.

CBD beauty

The CBD beauty industry is already booming, but it’s predicted to be even bigger by 2024 - like, $20 billion bigger. Through education and transparency, brands hope to abolish confusion around cannabinoids and inform buyers about great CBD products.
