Miracle baby born after Palestinian mother is killed in Israeli airstrike

A baby girl was saved from her dead mother's womb by Gaza doctors on Friday in a miracle operation.

Shaymaa Hussein al-Sheikh Ali, who was just 24 years old, was killed by shrapnel from an airstrike that targeted and demolished the roof of her family home.

But, amidst the tragedy, Gaza medical officials were able to perform a miracle- even after Shaymaa had been dead for an hour.

Dr Wajdi Qeshta told The Telegraph: "This baby - her family, her mother, her father and her brothers were killed in an Israeli airstrike.

"They brought in the mother, who had been in the last month of her pregnancy [and doctors] found the baby had a heartbeat."

The baby girl was born via posthumous Caesarean section and is currently being watched over by her grandmother.

Weighing just 5 pounds, the little girl suffered from a shortage of oxygen, which means that she will have to remain hospitalised for about five weeks.

New figures released by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), which show that 218 children – some only three months old – have been killed in Gaza.

Children comprise 21% of the Palestinian death toll, while another 1,516 have been injured, added Unicef.

The total Palestinian death toll rose to 1,058 on Sunday after 147 bodies were recovered from ruined buildings the previous day. Israel announced that another soldier was killed, bringing its total military losses to 43.
