Scotland Yard detectives have been given new resources after a fresh new "important" lead came to light. It is believed that the detectives are following a tip off that tot was snatched by child trafficking group, according to The Sun.

Investigators are taking the new information very seriously and admit it could be the final attempt to try and find Madeleine McCann, who disappeared while on holiday in the Algarve village of Praia Da Luz, Portugal, on the evening of May 3 2007.

She was abducted from her bed in the ground floor apartment she was staying in, while her parents Kate and Gerry were eating in a nearby tapas restaurant, checking regularly on her and her younger twin siblings.

A source told The Sun: "This is an important new line of inquiry which could provide an explanation on whether Madeleine was abducted and transported away.

"It raises hope that she could still be alive."

The source then added: "There is specific information which is being investigated.

"The team is trying to confirm or disprove it and will exhaust every possible avenue of information, as they always promised Mr and Mrs McCann they would.

"The Home Office has agreed to continue funding the police work until it is completed.

"At present, funding is due to run out next April when it will be reviewed again."

In September, a request for more money in the search for Maddie was signed off, allowing the police hunt to continue until the Spring 2017.

A spokesman for the Home Office said: “The resources required will be reviewed again at this point.”

More than £4.2m has been donated to Madeleine’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned Ltd since its launch just 12 days after Maddie disappeared in May 2007.
