Lib Dem politician resigns after slamming woman as ‘too ugly to rape’

A politician has quit his job as a Liberal Democrat councillor after he suggested a woman was ‘too ugly’ to rape.

Philip Drury, who led the political group on East Hampshire Council made the comments about the alleged rape victim, Serena Bowes, on Facebook.

“Not sure anyone would even want to think about it looking at her lol,” posted Drury to the social media site.****

After an investigation, the council decided not to take further action as the comments were made after he resigned from his post.

It is reported Drury stepped down from the Lib Dem party due to the pressures of work and now continues to sit as an independent councillor for the area’s Whitehall ward.

The Conservative leader of the council, Ferris Cowper, said he was “disappointed” that Drury was allowed to remain as an elected representative, but that the council had no power to remove him.

A spokesman for East Hampshire District Council told The Independent: “The council was appalled by the comments made by Cllr Drury and launched an independent disciplinary investigation.”

Bowes’ waived her right to anonymity in the case where she claims she was sexually assaulted in Italy.

It was also reported by the newspaper that Italian police dispute her claims.
