Jon Venables has been charged after images of child abuse were found on his computer for the second time.
The 35-year-old, who has been given a new identity, was recalled to prison last November after it was suspected he had child abuse images on his computer, but today has been charged and will face trial.
The Crown Prosecution Service released a statement this afternoon which read: "The man formerly known as Jon Venables has been charged with offences relating to indecent images of children and will appear in the Crown Court.
"In order that justice can be done, no further details are being released at this stage and the proceedings are subject to reporting restrictions."
He was released from prison in 2001 after serving eight years for the murder of two-year-old Jamie Bulger in 1993.
This is now the second time he has been recalled for this offence, after he was recalled in 2010.

James' mother Denise Fergus released a statement in November after he was re-arrested which read: "Venables has now proved beyond any doubt what a vile, perverted psychopath he has always been.
"I predicted Venables would re-offend unless they kept a very tight rein on him and I pray that now, someone from the UK government will finally listen to me.
"What hurts me most is the way the probation service has tried to cover this up," and said that she was only informed of the situation the night before his arrest.
She said it was "clear that they were trying to keep this quiet, until they got a call from the media".
Denise revealed she'd had "a hurried call" from the probation service at around 8.40pm with "few details given, just that he had breached his terms of the licence and returned to prison", leaving her "extremely upset, angry and feeling insulted."
She also wrote on Facebook: "I’m absolutely fuming that once again I’m last to know, that this has happened a week ago and I only got informed just hours before it’s hit the press. #JusticeForJames."
A source close to the investigation told The Sun: "It’s all about protecting the public. We have these systems so those who could be a risk to the public are picked up. That’s what happened here."
After being released in 2001 with a new identity, Venables re-offended and was arrested for affray and possession of cocaine in 2008.
In 2010, he began a two-year sentence after pleading guilty to downloading images of child abuse.
He was granted parole in 2013 and given a second new identity after his first was discovered.
Venables and his friend Robert Thompson, both 10-years-old, abducted two-year-old Jamie from The Strand shopping centre in Bootle on 12 February 1993.
They tortured and killed the little boy before leaving his body on a railway line to be discovered by brothers Terence and James Riley, who were just 13 and 14 at the time.
