Haringey Council had been fighting Ms Shoesmith’s case, but last year they came to an agreement. However up until now a confidentiality agreement has prevented the actual figure being released.

The reported pay out is less than the £1 million Ms Shoesmith was said to be claiming, and when reporters asked her comment on the compensation this week she replied: “This is not a figure I recognise.”

Baby P was just 17-months-old when he was killed in the care of his mother Tracey Connelly, her boyfriend Steven Barker and their lodger Jason Owen.

Haringey council said of the pay out: “The terms of the settlement are confidential. We are unable to comment further on this matter.”

Controversial Katie Hopkins has had her say on Ms Shoesmith’s compensation. She took to Twitter, writing: “Baby P boss gets £680,000 payout for unfir dismissal. Unbelievable. If you aren’t prepared to be accountable, don’t take the big salary.

“Baby P had his fingernails pulled out with pliers for sport. Sharon Shoesmith- do you deserve £680K of taxpayer money?”
