And it turns out that Sophia isn't just a pretty name, but it has a wonderful meaning too.

Babynamewizard.com - who undertook the research - explain: "A borrowing from the Greek, Sophia is directly derived from sophia (wisdom, skill). The name has been in common use in England since the 17th century, when it was bestowed upon the infant daughter of James I."

Talking about the name's worldwide takeover, Babynamewizard.com's founder Laura Wattenberg to Live Science: "It just blew me away that so many different languages and cultures would arrive at the same sound at the same time… I guess that really says something about the way culture is transmitted today."
