We love a good soap crossover here at Closer and a fair few soap stars have switched roles over the years. From Gemma Atkinson ditching Hollyoaks to star in Emmerdale to Catherine Tyldesley swapping the Dales for the Corrie cobbles - why star in just one drama when you can make your mark in multiple?

Switching soaps could be the case for recent EastEnders leaver Toby-Alexander Smith, who played Albert Square baddie Gray Atkins, as the actor has been tipped join Emmerdale after his character's crimes were finally exposed in recent episodes.

A role in Emmerdale could be an easy win for Toby, who has just welcomed his first child, a daughter named Bonnie, with his girlfriend Amy Walsh who stars in the popular ITV soap.

According the The Daily Star, the move could see Toby earn over £10,000 a week.

Jo Threlfall, Head of Digital PR at Embryo told the publication, "Toby-Alexander Smith's career has grown massively since his debut on EastEnders and since his dramatic departure from the soap, it has opened a window for the actor to be able to explore other options in his acting career.

"Rumours have revealed that the soap star could appear alongside his partner Amy if so, he could potentially earn over £500,000 a year!"

Domestic abuser and serial killer Gray Atkins finally met his demise and was carted off by police in a recent episode of EastEnders after confessing to murdering his wife Chantelle, Tina Carter and Kush Kazemi, but the door has been left open for a potential return.

Speaking about his plans now he’s finished EastEnders, Toby said, “Changing nappies, breast pumps and not getting any sleep probably.

“It’s all good. I’m very happy using this time now just to be present with Amy and Bonnie and I’m just loving every second of it.

“Who knows what’s around the corner but for right now I’m very happy to just be a full-time dad.”

It's already been an action-packed start to 2022 in Emmerdale as serial killer Meena Jutla continues her reign of terror, having already bumped off Leanna Cavanagh, Andrea Tate and Ben Tucker.

However, Meena’s time is about to come to an end as actress Paige Sandhu has confirmed she’s leaving the ITV soap for good. While it’s not yet known how Meena will be making an exit, it’s sure to be dramatic.

Speaking about Paige's exit, Rebecca Sarker, who plays her on-screen sister Manpreet Sharma, told The Sunthat she thinks it's very surreal her sister isn't going to be part of the show anymore, "It feels very surreal, it has been so intense. We messaged each other the other day and we know it’s coming soon.

"It’s a bit strange, to say the least, to think that I’m not going to be with her. I can’t really imagine her not being part of Manpreet’s storyline and vice versa. But you’ve got to be sensible about it, there was life before Meena and there will be life afterwards, I think."

Fear not though, Emmerdale fans, as there are also a number of new faces joining the show, as well as one or two fan favourite characters making a comeback. Here is everything you need to know about who is leaving, joining and returning to the Emmerdale cast in 2022…
