Netflix are planning to make an eight part true-crime series about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

In 2007, the 3-year-old disappeared from her villa in Portugal’s Praia de Luz while holidaying with her parents and two siblings. The case sparked huge controversy, and Madeleine McCann became one of the most famous missing person cases the world had ever seen.

And while her disappearance continues to hit the headlines year on year with new subjects and sightings coming to light, the case still remains unresolved.

Now, Netflix will be creating an eight part true-crime series about her disappearance, including interviews with investigators and other key figures in the case.

The documentary follows a string of true-crime series which have seen huge success on Netflix, including the one part Amanda Knox documentary, focusing on the famous murder of Meredith Kercher, and Making a Murderer, which examines the convictions of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey after the murder of Teresa Halbach.

Most recently, The Keepers soared to popularity, telling the story of the murder of nun Cathy Cesnik in the 1960s.

All three series inspired a cohort of do-it-yourself detectives who have begun investigating the cases themselves, volunteering time and resources to try and get to the bottom of what happened to the victims.

The popularity of Making a Murderer even caused Brendan Dassey’s guilty verdict to be thrown out, however this is now set to be disputed in the US appeals court later this month.

And that’s not all. The Keepers prompted the buried body featured in the series to be exhumed for DNA.
