Life beyond Litchfield: OrangeCon

OrangeCon last week brought together the world’s biggest Orange is the New Black superfans and even treated them to a recreation of a real-life prison set, alongside a glitzy party and screening of the new series. Alright for some, eh?

We always look forward to a bit of Netflix when we get home from work. What better way to relax? But we love it even more now that Season 3 of Orange is the New Black is available to watch. Yep, every episode is ready right this second for your viewing pleasure. If you're anything like us, we bet you’re thinking of sneaky ways to cancel seeing your friends this evening...

Season 3 brings back all our fave characters such as Piper, Alex, Red and Crazy Eyes and they've even thrown new girl Stella (played by Ruby Rose) into the mix to spice things up. But it's not just on screen that we're obsessing over the ladies of Litchfield. What are they really like once they hang up their orange jumpsuits for the day? We headed out to the official OITNB super fan event, OrangeCon, in NYC last week where we could barely contain our excitement.

We were treated to a screening of two new episodes of Season 3 and a real-life 'prison experience' on a special set which had been recreated (luckily we didn't find Pornstache lurking around though). Don't worry, we didn't just nose around. We also found time to chat to the cast to find out all the OrangeCcon goss, along with discovering that Red (played by Kate Mulgrew) isn't actually Russian!

Taylor Schilling, aka Piper Chapman, wore a gorge cherry cut-out Cushnie et Ochs frock, and seemed so excited to be there and give something back: "The show has resonated with so many people and it's just brilliant for us to thank the fans. I think they're continuing to get more and more passionate as they spend more time with us on the show." Aww! When asked which character she'd most like to play apart from Piper, she said it'd be Red: "I think her strength of character and I think that she's lived so many lives and she is a woman who is in charge. I love that about Red." So do we. But we reckon Piper's pretty strong deep down underneath her exterior, too...

We asked Big Boo, played by Lea DeLaria, about fan reactions and the first time she encountered a Big Boo related one: "The show had just started airing. I walked by Ace Hardware and the woman who works there came running out, screaming 'Big Boo! Sign my screwdriver!' She brought me an orange screwdriver and I signed it for her."

How incredible did Uzo Aduba, who plays Crazy Eyes, look? We literally couldn't believe the transformation from wearing those beige scrubs to the glamorous hottie we saw on the orange carpet. Uzo wore a colour-block halter gown by Dee Hutton and showed off the glossiest hair ever. She also told us how moved she was by the event: "An event like this is humbling. Our show wouldn't exist without the fans. I can't think of a better way to acknowledge that." We love you, Crazy Eyes. We also love Uzo after she managed to persuade the big bosses at Netflix to air the show a day early for all the eager fans (i.e. us!).

Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia, told us she is a Netflix fan girl. Currently, she's obsessed with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (that also comes highly recommended by us, by the way).
