Only he’s not a boy any more. The story picks up with Harry and friends when he is a 34-year-old man with “a couple of threads of silver” in his hair.

The new piece is a 1,500 ‘update’ written in the style of a tabloid journalist, from the perspective of character Rita Skeeter.

Set during a Quidditch tournament game, the ‘article’ reports how Harry, his wife Ginny Weasley, best friend Ron and his wife Hermione Granger are in the VIP area and surrounded by loving fans.

While Harry is made out to be greying in a similar way to say David Beckham, Rowling is not as complimentary about Ron.

Now running a joke shop like older brothers Fred and George, Ron’s ‘famous ginger hair appears to be thinning slightly’.

Rowling makes a reference to other careers too, adding that Harry has a cut on his cheek – from his job as an auror – and Hermione is working as Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and has enjoyed a ‘meteoric rise’ within the Ministry of Magic.

Both couples now have children, as readers of the book series would know, who feature in the update. Harry, Ron and Hermione are described as: “a certain gang of infamous wizards… no longer the fresh-faced teenagers they were in their heyday, but nevertheless recognisable.”

As well as updating fans on the character’s progress in life, Rowling also seems to take a swipe at tabloid journalism.

The story picks up with Harry aged 34, at a Quidditch tournament with friends Ron and Hermione

She doesn’t have a great relationship with the press, and claimed during the Leveson Inquiry that a journalist once tried to contact her by putting a note in her child’s schoolbag.

Rowling – or Rita – writes: “One always hesitates to invade the privacy of young people, but the fact is that anyone closely connected with Harry Potter reaps the benefits and must pay the penalty of public interest.”

The gossipy tone continues, hinting that Hermione enjoyed an affair with Quidditch star Victor Krum and suggesting there could be trouble in paradise for Harry and Ginny.

Rowling’s update also touches upon the lives of Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood and Bill Weasley.
