Line up the tissues for New Year guys, because Ronnie and Roxy's exit storyline will 'break your hearts', insists actress Rita Simons (who has played the part of Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders for over ten years).

Breaking her silence and baring her soul in an interview with The Sun, Rita opened up about her true feelings about the biggest exit storyline of the year - which will see the sisters killed off in a shock move by new producer Brian Kirkwood. Admitting that she and Sma had to be 'strong for each other’, Rita said:

"When Sean brought the idea to me, it was like I knew I was being given a kick, I knew I needed to do it, and I’m a big believer in the universe guiding you to where you need to go. I know in my heart of hearts it’s the right thing to do. I needed to get out. I needed to spread my wings. But because they’re like my family there, you don’t want to leave them."

She also added that not being at EastEnders almost everyday will be a huge shock to the system:

"I’ve spent more time with Sam than I have with my husband and my kids. The thought of leaving her breaks my heart. She’d have a day where she couldn’t stop crying and I would be really cold and strong and I would look after her. Then the next day it would be me who’d be set off by a packet of coffee or whatever and she would be strong. We’ve taken it in turns to be upset because one of us needs to be strong for the other."

Awwwwwwww, this makes us want to tear up :( :( :(!

Ever since the news leaked that the on-screen sisters will be leaving AT THE SAME TIME after a decade of award-winning drama – the rumour mill has been on fire with possible storylines. However, the folks over at EastEnders are keeping very quiet.

Will they be killed off in a dramatic stunt? And will it involve Ronnie's upcoming wedding to Jack Branning?

An insider told Digital Spy: "Rita and Samantha created the iconic Mitchell sisters and with their undeniable chemistry, they immediately created a double act that the viewers fell in love with.

"But when [the show staff] all sat down to work out where to take them, they all felt it was the right time to rest them. When you look back over nearly a decade and realise what they have been through, it seems that most avenues have been exhausted.”

As soap lovers will already know, sometimes we have to say goodbye to our favourite characters – in order to create the ‘on the edge of the seat’ drama that keeps us tuned in, day in day out.
