EastEnders’ spoilers: Charlie Cotton ‘has Dot’s best interests at heart’

As Charlie Cotton’s web of lies begins to unravel, Declan Bennett says he isn’t trying to cause Dot any harm.

In fact despite lying about her son being dead, Declan, who plays shady policeman Charlie, says his character only wants what’s best for Dot.

Fans of the soap now know nasty Nick is very much alive, and next week Charlie and his mother will flee the square after receiving a not so subtle message from the man.

Declan told a UK website: "When he first came on the scene, everyone's assumption was that because he was the spawn of Nick Cotton he would be bad.

"And he was up to something dodgy – people were probably wondering why he didn't want the coffin open at the wake. So they immediately jumped to the conclusion he was a bad guy."

Charlie and his mum might be planning to leave the Square, but Declan confirmed his character will be back.

When asked what other secrets Charlie is hiding, he said: "Let's say there is a handful. What is going on with Charlie has a knock-on effect, and it's creating more secrets than he ever imagined."

Charlie is still to find out that Ronnie Mitchell is carrying his child, Declan admitted he doesn't think that Ronnie will spill the beans easily.

He added: "Ronnie's got quite a history, hasn't she? You have to be very cautious around her. Charlie will have to tread carefully."
