EastEnders has recently aired scenes revealing Donna Yates (Lisa Hammond) is desperate for a baby, and even made a move on Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami), in the hope of getting pregnant.
Kush rejected Donna’s advances and was stunned by his fellow market-stall holder’s request.
Donna then decided that the perfect father to her child, would be none other than her brother Vincent Hubbard (Richard Blackwood).
And Vincent after speaking to Donna, comes round to the idea, and decides to speak to his wife, Kim Fox (Tameka Empson).
Lisa revealed to Inside Soap before the scenes aired: “Kim thinks it’s a ridiculous suggestion. She is thinking of the logistics and realises it would also mean Kim being forced to have a relationship with Donna!"
And last night, viewers saw Kim resort to getting in touch with Vincent’s mum Claudette in a bid to persuade the pair it was not a good decision.
Unfortunately for Kim, Claudette (Ellen Thomas) actually gave Donna and Vincent her blessing – despite Vincent’s anger at his wife for bringing his estranged mother into the discussion.
And viewers did not react kindly to the storyline, when Vincent explained to Kim about his decision and eventually talked her round – meaning the siblings would go ahead with the pregnancy.
However, what viewers need to remember is that Vincent and Donna are FOSTER siblings – therefore it’s not inbreeding.
Donna has been unlucky in love throughout her life, and has previously revealed that she finds it hard to trust someone in a relationship.
And now she feels that it’s the right time for her to have a child, but obviously faces the problem of not having a partner to conceive a baby with.
So clearly Donna will need a sperm donor to fulfil her dream of having a child, and conceive by artificial insemination.
And who better to ask than someone who has been there for her throughout her whole life, whom she trusts will do the right thing by her and the baby?
Speaking to Inside Soap, Lisa explained her character’s decision: "She looks around her at the men in her life and sees how Vincent is with Pearl, regardless of the other things he might do, and she thinks that she will have a good chance of getting him to be there for her.”
Would people have a problem if she had asked a friend she had known since childhood? No.
So why is this being branded as ‘disgusting’?
And the pair isn’t the first EastEnders adoptive siblings to have a child – Sharon Mitchell and Dennis Rickman had son Denny together before Dennis’ tragic death.
