Max Bowden - aka Ben Mitchell - has teased what's ahead for his EastEnders character and it sounds like it's going to be intense.

Fans of the show will know that Ben has already had a tough year, he briefly split from his husband Callum Highway (Tony Clay) after he was raped by Lewis Butler (Aidan O'Callaghan). He recently discovered that the rapist would not face criminal charges despite his actions.

However things for the Mitchell family took another turn and were rocked to the core when Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Following the news, Ben has been searching for a cure for her brain tumour but when we caught up with EastEnders star Max - who plays the character - at the TV Choice Awards, he hinted that Ben will react in the classic Mitchell way.

"Ben struggles with control. So I think something that we can be aware of is that Ben doesn't know how to handle a situation where he can't control the outcome.

"It resonates in anger, disparity and confusion."

He went on to say, "At the end of the day this is the mother of his child and when he feels like he can't change the outcome, it's going to be tough."

And while Max has admitted that Lola's current storyline is "heartbreaking", he went on to praise Danielle Harold who plays the character.

"Danielle is sensational. It's been really tough, she's working her butt off every single day.

"As a clan the Mitchells are really grouped together. We're closer than ever, we've even got our own group chat now. It's a hard watch, it's a hard performance but it's been really amazing."

And while it's been confirmed that Lola will be leaving Walford, fans have speculated that Lola and Jay will get married before she dies.

During our chat with Max we had to ask about EastEnders' Christmas episodes this year and whether there will be any happy news in Albert Square.

"I hope so. Not that I'm involved in but they sound great," he admitted.

"Shane [who plays Alfie Moon] is back. He's absolutely brilliant, he brings so much to the show and not just as an actor but as a cast member.

"Me and Jamie [who plays Jay Brown] are in fits of laughter all the time and at the moment we need that.

"Telling this story is tough. So to have Shane and Brian [who plays Rocky] they're like Ant and Dec," he joked.
