Shona Ramsay and David Platt have had a difficult year after Shona's brain injury following last year's Christmas Day shootings.
But despite nearly breaking up a number of a times over Shona's erratic behaviour and attention from other women, David has stood by her and this Christmas it's a decidedly happier affair when they decide to give their marriage another go.
But not everyone is in the festive spirit as Sarah Platt's attempt to get Gary Windass locked away for Rick Neelan's murder falls flat, when he's released due to lack of evidence.
Gary may protest his innocence but Maria Connor isn't convinced.
Todd Grimshaw's meddling once again causes friction between Billy Mayhew and Paul Forman when Billy learns Paul's been hiding the truth from him. A grieving Leanne Battersby struggles to hold it together when Nick Tilsley's son Sam comes to stay and Gemma Winter and Chesney Brown worry about how they'll afford Christmas with four babies.

Elsewhere, Nick and Leanne are adjusting to life without Oliver when Natasha breaks the news that she's accepted a job in London - and Sam has gone missing.

Later on Sam is adamant that he doesn't want to move to London with his mum and begs Nick to let him to move in with him and Leanne.

But Leanne is far from keen on the idea and tells Nick in uncertain circumstances that he needs to be firm with Sam about why he needs to stay with his mum.

Still, she's invested in Nick keeping a good relationship with his son. So when Nick goes to pick up Sam for a visit he's touched when he returns home and discovers Leanne has cooked them a Christmas dinner and decorated a tree for them.

Battling his emotions, Nick explains to Sam that it's not possible for him to live here as the timing is all wrong, but promises to visit him all the time in London.

Arriving home midway through the visit, Leanne is determined to remain upbeat but things all get too much for her when she catches Sam playing with Oliver's old music box.

Later on Leanne bumps into her sister Toyah who's thrilled to tell her they've had a call asking if they can foster a baby from today.

As Toyah excitedly babbles about the baby and Nick arrives round the corner, an overcome Leanne is forced to make her excuses and leave to hide her tears.

Elsewhere, Shona is full of remorse as she apologises to David for mucking things up once again and though David insists it's fine, it's clear it's not.

Following Shona's games, Ray is piling on the pressure for David to withdraw his campaign against the planning application for the redevelopment.

Despite David holding firm, Ray reminds him he's got security footage of Shona breaking into the Bistro and stealing alcohol and if he doesn't drop the campaign, he'll show the police.

Back at number 8, David and Shona have a heart to heart about where their relationship is headed and a confused Shona says all the wrong things.

When Gemma's patch is stolen by Michael, Chesney pulls some strings and manages to secure a stand at the local market.

But it's soon clear it's not the patch but Gemma's selling skills that are lacking and Kirk and Chesney send her on her way while they take over the stand.

Hours later Chesney and Kirk are celebrating a successful afternoon at the market but are soon dismayed to see their stock has been stolen - along with the cash tin.

Over at the factory, Paul is torn when he receives another call from Will who says he's in the middle of a crisis and begs him to meet.

Overhearing the conversation, a sympathetic Todd urges Paul to go to Will and promises he'll cover for him - as Billy gets suspicious.

Paul tracks down Will who tells him he watched his step-dad beat up his mum, and while Paul insists they go to the police Will says he's too scared.

Over at the Rover's, Todd finds Billy having a lonely pint and takes a seat next to him. Billy confides in Todd he's worried about Paul.

When Billy explains that Paul has been distracted looking after a friend who needs his help, Todd acts as though it's new information.

After meeting with Will, Paul tells Todd that he can't go on lying to Billy and later at home spills everything about getting too invested in the helpline.

Billy tries his best to be understanding and tells Paul there was no reason to lie to him - but when he realises Todd was involved, his mood changes.

An angry Billy reminds Paul that he knows Todd much better than him and if he's got himself involved, it's likely he's up to no good.

Elsewhere, having heard from Bernie that Gary was desperate to get hold of a watch she'd found in the woods, Maria's suspicions about Gary are piqued.

Maria confronts Gary about the watch and asks outright if it's got anything to do with Rick's disappearance, but Gary denies all knowledge.

The police explain they've found evidence of a body buried in the woods that could have been Rick Neelan, and Gary maintains his innocence.

Back on the street, Sarah pays a visit to the salon flat when she hears from Craig the police have had to let Gary go over lack of evidence.

A furious Sarah accuses Gary of moving Rick's body to save his skin while Gary insists its Sarah's own tracks she's trying to cover.

Neither of them notice Maria arrive home. When Maria asks again what's going on and Gary can't come up with a convincing answer, she kicks him out of the flat and threatens to call the police.

The next day, Maria is caught off guard when Kelly, Rick's daughter, shows up at the flat saying she needs to talk with Gary.
