Coronation Street fans are deserting the soap in protest - and it's all apparently down to the show's soaring body count.

Just 5.94 million people tuned in to see a new twist in the Tina McIntyre murder in last Friday night's double-header.

And it seems as if they quickly lost interest, with just 5.78 million returning for the second half of the show.

According to Twitter outbursts, it's the violence of the show, which used to pull in 26.6million in the 80s, that is causing viewers to switch off.

Fans have taken to Twitter to blast the recent bloodlust on the soap - with Tina the soap’s 17th violent death in just four years.

One said: “The murder rate is worse than the Bronx. Corrie should get back to what it does best – gentle Northern humour.”

Another tweeted: “Chances of dying violently in it must be about one in three.”

One more insisted: “Cannot get over Coronation Street. These soaps are so brutal and violent these days.."

Former Corrie star Roya Varraclough, 79 - who played Alec Gilroy for 22 years - told the Daily Mirror he refuses to watch the soap which made him famous.

He said: “I don’t watch the show, it has changed so much now from what it was.

“The characters have changed and it has drifted away from what it used to be – there was a lot of comedy then. In fact I don’t watch any of the soaps."

“They all follow each other, one outdoing the other. If one has a rape, the other has a rape. It’s a shame.”
