Coronation Street fans are reeling from the news Rita Tanner could soon be killed off

Barbara Knox has played the soap legend since before many of us were even born but now her days on the cobbles could be numbered.

In shocking scenes, the much-loved character will be diagnosed with a brain tumour and refuse emergency treatment.

The Kabin owner fears surgery could lead to her losing her memory and she's terrified she'll be left unable to recognise family and friends.

Viewers have already seen Rita become forgetful in recent episodes and it was thought she could be developing dementia.

But in October, she'll be told the symptoms are actually due to a brain tumour and she'll need surgery to remove it if she wants to survive.

Sob! Could this really be the end for our Rita?

Coronation Street without Rita would be like tea without biscuits as she's been on our telly box for decades.

Her most famous storyline involved her relationship with her abusive husband Alan Bradley, who was killed after being hit by a tram in Blackpool.
