Coronation Street was hit with a slew of complaints this week after disturbing scenes showed Gemma Winter harming her baby.
Last year Gemma became a mum to quadruplets, and recent storylines have shown her struggling to cope with being a mum of four.
But recently it’s seemed as though there is something more sinister at play, with Gemma suffering from symptoms of postnatal depression.
In the scene in question, Gemma wakes to hear one of her babies crying. Going in to check on them, she can’t calm down Aled, who has hearing issues. She proceeds to bring him into the kitchen and put him into the washing machine (although some fans reckon it’s the oven).
The next scene shows Gemma waking up in bed and realising it’s all been a dream – but she’s understandably shaken.

The scenes were written to explore some of the complexities of managing poor mental health as a new mum – but many viewers took to Twitter to complain they crossed a line.
“Did Gemma really just dream she put the baby in the oven? That’s a bit dark even for me #Corrie”, said one unimpressed commenter, and another said, “#coronationstreet reallly??? Gemma dreaming she put the baby in the oven?? Not the best or appropriate idea is it…”.

However, some viewers praised the soap for its unflinching portrayal, with one writing, “Very impressed with @itvcorrie handling of Gemma's storyline. Gemma's words about struggling to breastfeed and letting her babies down? I said them myself, word for word, as I'm sure thousands of other mums have”.
“Gemma’s storyline really makes me sad, because I know that many women experience what she’s currently going through,” said another. “It’s even harder as she has 4 babies! Bless her #Corrie.”
Four people also complained to broadcast regulator Ofcom.
Upcoming scenes will see Gemma's mum Bernie frogmarch her to the doctor's to seek treatment for post-natal depression.
