When news first broke that Coronation Street barmaid Michelle Connor was due to suffer a stillbirth, many viewers praised the soap for tackling such a sensitive storyline. Kym Marsh – who plays Michelle in the soap – was also praised for her bravery, as she lost her own child in similar circumstances in 2009.

However the storyline has barely begun, and already Corrie bosses have been labelled insensitive.

In Monday night’s episode, Michelle - who is pregnant with partner Steve McDonald’s baby - experienced horrendous stomach pains while attending fellow Weatherfield resident Leanne Battersby’s baby shower, and was quickly rushed to hospital.

And viewers were shocked that as the emotional storyline unfolded, the song Bye Bye Baby by the Bay City Rollers could be heard in the background.

Angry viewers took to Twitter to express their disbelief, with one writing: “Wow shocked. Just watched @itvcorrie and Michelle had her miscarriage while at the start of the episode they played ‘bye bye baby’ at start.”

Another person tweeted: “Not the most appropriate song to play on jukebox Corrie. Bye Bye Baby, Michelle’s having a miscarriage you know.”

Michelle was given a glimmer of hope after being checked over by doctors as she was told her baby had a strong heartbeat.

But in scenes set to air soon, she will lose the baby as it is too small to survive during the 23rd week of her pregnancy.
