Five years after they found romance in the Love Island villa, series five's Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury stunned fans last week by calling it quits, with their split sending shock-waves across the internet amid allegations he’d cheated multiple times.
But after Tommy’s reps strongly denied that was the case, insiders tell Closer that, behind the scenes, the boxer has been “begging” Molly-Mae, 25, for forgiveness.
The couple, who were engaged and share one-year-old daughter Bambi, have long seemed like one of the most stable Love Island couples. Fans have been invested in their relationship since the beginning, making their break-up and the subsequent claims that Tommy, 25, cheated on his fiancée harder to bear.
“Tommy has told Molly-Mae that they can make this work, and he loves her,” a source says. “Molly is torn, though. She’s confided to pals that she’s in a dark place right now – she was set to marry this man, but in some ways she doesn’t appear to know him at all.”
When Molly-Mae’s statement appeared out of the blue on Instagram last week, the influencer made no attempt to hide her “heartbreak” at the split. She wrote that she was “extremely upset” by the news, making Tommy’s reported pleas all the harder to hear.
“Never in a million years did I think I’d ever have to write this,” she told her 8.1 million followers. “After five years of being together I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way.”
Tommy’s own statement followed less than an hour later. “I am heartbroken to share that Molly and I have decided to end our relationship,” the boxer wrote, before thanking Molly-Mae for “making me a dad”.
Both Tommy and Molly-Mae stressed that Bambi, who they welcomed in January 2023, was their priority.
And on social media, Tommy has appeared every inch the doting dad and fiancé, just recently calling Molly-Mae “my world, my rock, my everything”. A month ago, Tommy, who is the half-brother of champion heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, posted a sweet snap with Molly-Mae and Bambi, which he captioned, “My everything in a photo.”
But behind the scenes, Molly-Mae was struggling. During work trips abroad and holidays without her, Tommy was spotted partying with various women. And it’s now been claimed that Molly-Mae believed Tommy had cheated on her multiple times, often on holidays when he knew he wouldn’t be recognised.
According to one report, Molly-Mae called the relationship off after confronting him over claims that he cheated with a Danish woman he met on holiday in Macedonia.
Tommy’s spokesperson denied the claims, telling Closer, “Tommy is horrified by the false allegations of cheating being circulated by the media and he’s consulting his lawyers.”
Following their split, Tommy is said to have moved out of the Cheshire mansion the pair bought together two years ago. Molly-Mae has stayed there and is being supported by friends and family, but the insider says she’s still not 100 per cent sure of her decision.
“Molly confided she had been blindsided and feels broken,” the source continues. “The trust has gone, but she wants to believe Tommy. She keeps questioning how they have gone from being the dream to a nightmare. He has ruined everything.” However, even before their split, Molly-Mae had been struggling, and had been seen without her wedding ring on a number of occasions.
Having always documented her life for her 1.86 million YouTube subscribers, the vlogger had spoken publicly about struggling with body confidence after giving birth. In January, Molly-Mae revealed that she and Tommy hadn’t had sex in the 11 months since Bambi had been born. Months later, she admitted that she didn’t feel confident enough to wear a bikini on holiday.
And with Tommy’s boxing career meaning he was away on the other side of the world for long periods of time, Molly-Mae had struggled with loneliness. In the last vlog she posted before the split announcement, she’d claimed she’d been “solo-parenting” Bambi while her fiancé had been away.
The source says, “Molly-Mae knows things weren’t perfect and is struggling to forgive Tommy. But Tommy’s a boxer and he won’t go down without a fight.
“Molly knows she has to stay strong – she has no choice as she’s a mum,” the insider adds. “Bambi is her world, so protecting her comes first and she doesn’t want their daughter affected by bad blood. Trying to process being a single mother is pulling her to pieces, she can’t face a future without Tommy in it.
“Molly is no pushover, but Tommy has told her he won’t give up on them. Molly still loves him, although right now she’s also very angry. But she doesn’t want to face a future without him.”
