The Love Island star became a first-time mum in September to daughter Bonnie, after harbouring dreams of starting a family for years. And now, seven months into motherhood, Laura Anderson – who has recently started her new role as a co-host on Capital Breakfast Scotland – tells Closer how raising Bonnie has given her an incentive to compliment herself more.
Referring to her single-parent status since splitting from her ex, Gary Lucy, Laura, who turns 35 this month, says, “I was a little bit scared before, doing it on my own. I’m so proud of myself, that I don’t mind bigging myself up, and I would big up any other mum as well. There’s so much more to [motherhood] than I realised.”
She adds, “My Instagram has turned into such a lovely, positive place since having Bonnie, from people saying, ‘You’re such a good mum’. Maybe they’re just blowing smoke up my a**e, I don’t know. But I believe it, because I feel like I am. It is really hard, but it’s just so rewarding.”
Former Love Island finalist Laura split from soap star Gary, 42, just a fortnight before they went public with their pregnancy announcement in February last year. The couple met when they filmed Celebs Go Dating in the summer of 2022, and have enjoyed an on/off romance since.
And now, discussing how she is going to achieve the juggle between work commitments and motherhood, Laura tells Closer where there’s a will, there’s a way – but she will be roping in some extra pairs of hands.
“I’ve overcome hurdles already. I know that when I think something’s not possible, you always figure it out,” she explains, adding, “I just need to ask for help. I’m very stubborn and I like to think I can do it all. But it’s OK to ask for help.”
Laura – who shot to stardom after starring on Love Island 2018– will experience the juggle more than ever now she has made her debut on the airwaves, joining Fat Brestovci as co-host on Capital Breakfast Scotland.
Revealing she is really excited to get stuck in, Laura predicts that the early-morning alarm call won’t be too much of a culture shock thanks to her vocation before her life-changing summer six years ago.
She says, “I used to be cabin crew, so I got up at all different hours. This is going to be fine. I am a morning person anyway. Honestly, one coffee and it’s like I’ve had 25 tequilas. I’ll be flying.”
And adding that she is a “huge manifester”, Laura confesses there was a certain radio host who she channelled in a bid to make her dreams come true.
She laughs, “I put my vision boards on my phone as a screensaver. I actually had a picture of Rochelle Humes, who [works on] Heart. Basically, I put my face over her face – I was trying to envision myself working on the radio. It’s so sad!”
Laura Anderson is the new co-host for Capital Breakfast Scotland.
