Noughties EastEnders fans may remember Joey Branning.
He arrived in Walford and had what is one of EastEnders most controversial storylines - but more on that in a bit.
Despite soap star David Witts only being on the show for a year, he definitely got our pulses racing and was nominated twice for Inside Soap Awards' Sexiest Male - winning in 2013.
The EastEnders star hasn’t been on our screens for over a decade now, so we thought we’d see what the actor is doing today.
What happened to Joey Branning on EastEnders?
Joey arrived in the Square hoping to persuade his sister Alice (Jasmyn Banks) to move back home but it wasn't long before he bumped into his scheming dad Derek (Jamie Foreman), who he had a strained relationship with.
During this time in Albert Square, he punched his dad, stole money from him to give to Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater), and ultimately watched Derek die of a heart attack without doing a thing.
As well as that, he had a short-lived fling with Lucy Beale and kissed Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty). He also dated Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) but his relationship with her was a sham and just so he could get the villain to admit that she killed Michael Moon (Steve John Shepard) after she framed his sister.
What happened with Joey and Lauren Branning?
A lot. The two of them are first cousins (their dads are brothers) and they ended up getting into a secret sexual relationship.
They caused a lot of drama for their family, as they were caught on separate occasions by Derek and their step-grandma Dot (June Brown) having a smooch. Max and Lauren’s mum Tanya Branning (Jo Joyner) surprisingly supported the pair when their relationship came to light (courtesy of Dot).
However, the duo eventually ended their relationship and Lauren left with her mum and brother Oscar (Charlee Hall) so that she could go to rehab for her alcohol addiction.
Why did David Witts leave EastEnders?
A source told The Daily Star that he was only meant to be on the show for half a year.
"When David first signed up to play Joey he only signed up for six months. He always said he didn't want to stay for long but was persuaded to extend his original contract a couple of times.
"Following the departure of his on-screen sister Alice, he felt the time would be right to move on," they explained.
Is David Witts returning to EastEnders?
Considering he’s been away from EastEnders for a long while now without even a cameo reappearance, we don’t think that he will.
