She appears on the big screen this week starring in new thriller movie Bull. And while Tamzin Outhwaite’s career is flying high, she’s also feeling on top of the world in her personal life. She found love four years ago with film and documentary maker Tom Child, 30, and says they’re in a “lovely place”.
The star – who turns 51 this week – also feels better than ever after virtually quitting booze, going on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to help ease her menopausal symptoms and regularly turning to a plant-based diet for a boost. Tamzin, who found fame playing Mel Owen in EastEnders, began the perimenopause at the start of the first lockdown, ironically while filming YouTube comedy drama, Dun Breedin’, about a group of 50-plus female friends.
“It was almost psychosomatic,” she tells Closer. “When I was playing a woman with menopause I ended up getting the symptoms – anxiety, night sweats and insomnia.”

EastEnders bosses worked on the powerful knife crime storyline alongside Brooke Kinsella 10 years after her brother was fatally stabbed.
But she took swift action by asking her doctor to prescribe HRT as a “preventative” measure after hearing her Dun Breedin’ co-stars Kate Thornton and Benidorm actress Julie Graham discussing another symptom – red mist – referencing fits of extreme anger.
Tamzin says, “The way they were talking about it, I was like, ‘Jeez, I want to get on HRT before I get that. The rage looks bad!’”
In August, she was prescribed oestrogen gel and progesterone pills and, while she blames the menopause for temporarily “setting back” her self-confidence, she beams as she describes being showered with compliments by partner Tom. “He thinks I’m Superwoman, which is great. To have somebody really love you and think you’re really incredible and funny is a wonderful thing,” she smiles.

After meeting at a yoga class and then going on a “five-hour pub crawl” for their first date, Tamzin didn’t expect anything serious with the film-maker, who is 21 years her junior.
But the pair realised they “didn’t want to be apart” and, within a year, Tom had moved into the family home in London that Tamzin shares with Florence, 13, and Marnie, nine, her daughters with ex Tom Ellis, 42.
Following a tough divorce in 2013, after Tom allegedly cheated while away in LA, Tamzin says she remembers thinking, “That’s it. What’s going to happen now?”
She adds, “But some things come to you and they’re blessings in disguise, aren’t they? That’s what it feels like now.”
And Tamzin, who says she “doesn’t see a need” to marry again, laughs as she describes the teasing she gets from her family over their age gap. “It’s mainly when my kids and my man are taking the mickey out of me, saying things like, ‘When you were young, did they have TV?’ Then he’ll be like, ‘Your mum lived in the black and white days.’ As long as you’ve got a sense of humour about it, I don’t think it’s a bad thing!”
Age-defying Tamzin says she’s dramatically cut down on meat and dairy since going on a vegan bootcamp two years ago. She now has periods of being vegan and, in general, tries to eat plant-based most of the time.
“I’ve just done a couple of weeks of being meat and dairy-free, trying vegan ready meals. Now, the majority of what I eat is vegan and I’m eating meat or fish maybe once a week. It’s about not cutting everything out, but being mindful about what I’m eating. I definitely feel better for it.”
As well as making dietary changes, Tamzin has also cut back on booze after, like many of us, she drank more alcohol during lockdown.
She says, “We’re calling it ‘mindful drinking’. During the pandemic, me and Tom would open a bottle of wine, earlier than normal, but since everyone’s been allowed out again, it’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that’. Let’s face it, I’ve always loved having a drink with my mates. I’m not good at just having a glass, so now I’m training myself to only have a glass or two on special occasions.”
She adds, “I got to a certain age where hangovers are too big and I started thinking much more about my health.”
And after starting to cut back on alcohol in the summer, she reveals she already feels better for it. “I reckon I’ve drunk a couple of times over the last month. I haven’t noticed any physical improvements to my skin or hair yet, but I definitely feel healthier.”
And the star insists there is “no way” she’d consider having a child with Tom, but the family have recently welcomed a new puppy called Bowie. She adds, “It reminded me of going back to that time [of having a newborn] and there are wonderful parts of it, but going back there now? It’s not for me!”

Julie Graham is spot on with most things, as are Angela Griffin and Kate Thornton. If it’s career advice, I would probably ask Ang. If it’s anything to do with food, I’d phone Lisa Faulkner. They’re the most wonderful group of really intelligent, powerful, funny women. During lockdown, we used to do cocktails over Zoom.

Fresh air, water, exercise – it’s basic really. Lisa Armitage’s skincare range is wonderful, especially the Multi-Miracle Balm. Finding that has been a big thing for me. I tried Botox a long time ago, but I’ve not had it for years.
