Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas opens up about the moment he told his son, 9, about his mother’s death

Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas lost his wife Gemma to leukemia just three days after she was diagnosed in 2017.

Simon, 46, has been open about the difficulty he experienced dealing with his wife’s sudden death at the age of 40.

Now the presenter has described the heartbreaking moment he was forced to tell the couple’s nine-year-old son that his “mummy had died.”

Simon has described his “hands were trembling” as he told his son, Ethan.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Simon said, I said, 'Ethan, you know Mummy hasn’t been very well …?”

The presenter said he went on to remind his son that his mother had been in hospital and been treated by doctors, who tried everything they could to make her better.

He added, “Before the words could even form in my mouth, tears filled his eyes and he cried out, 'Has Mummy died?'

"Every part of me wanted to somehow sugar-coat what I had to say, but I knew, for his sake, I couldn’t.

"His legs began to buckle and I said what I’d never imagined saying in my worst nightmares: ‘I’m so, so sorry, but Mummy’s died.’”

Simon went on to describe his battle with grief and admitted her turned to alcohol to cope in the wake of his wife’s death. He also described dealing with sleep-loss and suicidal thoughts.

But the former Blue Peter presenter said he turned to writing to cope with his grief and is now releasing a memoir of his experience.

He describes his nighttime routine with his son and says that they talk to Gemma before Ethan goes to sleep, telling her they hope she’s “having a good time in heaven.”

Eighteen months on from Gemma’s death, Simon has found love again with new girlfriend, church minister’s daughter Derrina Jebb, 27.

The father-of-one has previously spoken out about feeling guilt about the new relationship, adding that he asked himself if it was too early to move on.

But he concluded, “I know Gemma would be happy for me.”
