Simon Thomas' wife Gemma has passed away at the age of 40.

The Sky Sports and Blue Peter presenter announced the news in a heartbreaking tweet, revealing that his wife had been diagnosed with cancer just three days prior to her death.

Simon wrote, "Today I am crushed with indescribable pain.

"Just three days after falling ill with Acute Myloid Leukaemia, my dear wife Gemma passed away yesterday evening surrounded by her family and friends.

"If you are a prayer - pray for my boy Ethan. 8yrs, precious and in bits. Thank you."

Speaking to The Mirror, Simon also went into more detail about how quickly Gemma's condition worsened and described how the couple had gone to the doctor three times in the days before she died.

The TV presenter said, "She felt very unwell last weekend and we took her to the doctor's three times, but three times they didn't seem concerned.

"They just said to rest, but on Monday we took her to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

"After lots of tests they diagnosed her with blood cancer but they didn't know what."

Acute Myloid Leukaemia is a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow. However it wasn't until the pair attended the hospital that they made the discovery.

"A few hours later we were rushed to Churchill Hospital in Oxford, to specialists," he added. "They are an incredible team.

"We knew that we were in one of the very best places in the country."

Gemma immediately started chemotherapy and, at first, seemed to respond well, but her condition quickly deteriorated.

He went on, "For the first couple of days she was responding well, but yesterday morning she went downhill very quickly. She had bleeding on the brain.

"I was told yesterday morning she would be gone in a few hours."

Gemma then passed away surrounded by family and friends.

"There was a real sense of peace," her husband said. "Today is the hardest pain I have ever felt ever."

Simon added that their son has since been asking for his "mummy back" for Christmas. "My little boy had a little time with her but she wasn't able to speak to him," he said.
