Following comments from Edwina Currie in the jungle, Mel Sykes revealed she is “self-sufficient” and "doesn’t need a man for anything but sex".

Mel, 44, hit out at the politician, snapping: "I don't need a man for anything but sex. I'm self-sufficient me, I've been that for 12 years. "I've got all my mates, my family and I don't need a man.

It would be nice if he was there, but I don't need them there."

After getting a bit teary, Edwina later added: "It could be a generational thing. It's just the idea, I find it so bizarre.

These beautiful women in their 40s are saying I don't need a man." Mel then asked the 68-year-old to be more supportive to the ‘sisterhood’ to which Edwina responded: “When I was a kid, the sisterhood wanted me to stay home, get married and have kids.”

“Well actually men are people and we all need people.”

Things calmed down when Kendra Wilkinson, 29, got involved, which slightly mellowed Mel.

The presenter-turned-underwear-model then changed her tune and revealed: "I'm envious that she has the love of her life.”

"It's amazing. But I was only cross because I was being told that I'm not independent."

Mel has remained single since her public split from husband Jack Cockings last year.
