Love Island’s Megan Barton Hanson and Wes Nelson have split up, Megan announced this morning.

The couple, who met while filming Love Island in 2018, had moved in together and bought a pet hamster during their six-month romance.

Announcing the split on her Instagram, Megan, 24, wrote: “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well under a year, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.

“We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to one incredibly wonderful hamster and we ask for his and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

“We haven’t really conducted our relationship that privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.

“Love, Megan & Wes.”

The star then went on to post another Instagram story on the situation, and wrote: “In all seriousness, I am so grateful and so blessed to have found Wes, I will always love and adore him and I am so lucky to call him my best friend, it has been an incredibly hard decision to make for both of us but we are both looking forward to moving on together and supporting each other in everything we do.

“I will be down at dancing on ice tomorrow to watch him smash it again. Only one thing left to say come on Wes and Vanessa.”

It’s been a tough week for Megan, who followed up her announcement with another post calling out trolls. She said, “Wow, I can’t catch a break this week. Hospitalised, burgled, public break up and now these fools.”

Megan and Wes announce split

Wes moved into Megan’s flat in Southend just three days after the pair flew home from the Love Island villa in July. The couple then relocated to London together and bought a hamster.

Megan has previously spoken out about working on her relationship with Wes, commenting that the pair are always “honest with each other.” However, in recent weeks Megan has found herself feuding with Wes’ Dancing on Ice partner, Vanessa Bauer.

The drama began when viewers accused Megan of looking a bit glum while watching Wes from a seat in the audience as he performed with Vanessa on the show, but Wes was quick to rush to her girlfriend’s defence.

However, it all turned a bit sour whenMegan wrote a scathing Instagram story after Vanessa broke up her boyfriend.

Megan wrote to her 1.8 million followers: “"@vanessabauer_skates love that you decide to announce your breakup with your boyfriend on the night of your 1st performance with my boyfriend!"

She continued, "You've never reached out to me once or invited me to watch you train, it pained you to introduce yourself to me last night you didn't even look me in the eye LOL hope the tactical breakup got you the headlines you wanted babe @wes.nelson"

However, Megan later dismissed the feud – telling her followers she was “past caring” about it, while she also declared she was not a jealous person. The couple made a loved-up appearance together at the National Television Awards earlier this week.

WATCH Love Island's Sam Bird reveals who he is dating

The Sun reported that sources close to the stars said they’d moved out separately from the flat on Friday after discovering their home had been burgled.

And now Megan has confirmed the split but Wes is yet to publicly comment. They join a number of other of couples who have broken up since the end of Love Island. Laura Anderson and Paul Knops quickly parted ways in the weeks after the final, while Ellie Brown and Charlie Brake also split, along with Georgia Steel and Sam Bird. Samira Mighty and Frankie Foster also broke up after Frankie was accused of cheating.

Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer announced their split in December, however later backtracked and said they were still in love. It means that they, along with Adam Collard and Zara McDermott and Kaz Crossley and Josh Denzel, are the last remaining couples still together after this year’s show.
